Default does stomach surgery resolve diabetes?

I saw a special on TV- I think it was on CBS that stated that when people have stomach surgery and have their duideum (sp?) removed--(which is the area of the stomach where the stomach contents empty into the small bowel)
there diabetes goes away--almost imidiately.

These people go into the hospital on insulin and other medications and come out of the hospital on no meds, before they loose any weight with great blood sugar levels.

I thought if that was true then the duideum has more to do with diabetes than the pancreas or insulin resistance. Therefore making the stomach healthy is a valuable part of any diabetics health care.

I know myself that when I go on a semi fast and substitute lemon juice and water for food I feel satisfied and happy but it messes up my sugar for a couple of months after just a week of the lemon juice. Lemon juice dieting is actually why my body succombed to this diabetes in the first place. I asked my doctor if it was the lemon juice--which has no calories or artificial sugars so it seemed like a great idea because it takes away hunger pains--and he said it was fine, but after trying it I messed up my sugar again--raising my levels 1/2 point on the 3 month blood test- A1C.

Does anyone have any insight into how or why the duideum would have any effect on blood sugar and also how to make that thing 20 years younger healthwise?? Most of us develope diabetes to some extent as we age so we need to revive that duideum!!

I saw that on cbs, 60 minutes I beleive and let me tell you I was very hopeful.

I am a type 2 diabetic but not considered obese. I cannot qualify for the lap either. If getting a gastric bypass meant no diabetes for me then I would definately do it. The problem with that is they only offer it to people they consider to be very over weight. I think they are are going to continue to study this and I hope one day that this will become an option for diabetics like myself so that we can totally eliminate diabetes.

I have lost about 25 pounds since October and it only changed my aic by a tenth of a point!

I don't know anything about the duideum lol! I just know I was very excited with that study!

I thought about the surgery and know 2 people that had it including my sister.

Weigh the pros and cons. The gastric bypass changes your body A LOT. Read up on it and talk to people. There are a lot of web sites where you can connect with people that had it. There is always risk involved with surgery. I am not sure I could go through with it after reading the negatives of it and talking with the people I knew.

The doctor just put me on Byetta which some say it chemical gastric bypass. I have lost about 9 lbs in a week on it. I had gained about 20 on Avandia so anything after that will be a plus. That is how I found this site while doing research on Byetta.
