Default Does Sudafed make anyone else feel weird??

I have a terrible head cold and it seems worse at night. I took 2 sudafed last night about 2 hours before bed and I kept waking up with my heart racing. Does it affect anyone else like this??

What else is out there that is going to help me without the nasty side effects??

Sudifed is an "upper". That is why the meth heads steal/buy it for making meth.

I would suggest using Nyguil night time like meds or Alka Seltzer night time.
Then for the day, use the "day time" formula of these products.

Also another thing I always suggest is always start with the lowest dose possable with any "new to the system" medications. Even if it is a med you have used in the past, over time your body can have different reactions to it. So if a med says to "take 2", only take 1 for that first dose. Then you can make adjustments as needed.

Please also know that just because it is sold over the counter or given by a doctor, doesn't mean it is "safe for YOU". Know your body and watch for possible side effects.
Racing heart, is the biggest side effect for Sudifed. So a person with heart or high blood pressure issues should not take such a drug.

If you have other sensitivities to meds, try taking childrens meds. There are less side effects for adults.

You're not alone here, Benadryl makes me hyper, and Sudafed helps but I don't like how it makes me feel, like you said--heart racing, I already have anxiety.

I think there's something called Corocedin? (sp?) That is specifically for people w/high bp, maybe that will help you not to get the heart racing--

I can't take Sudafed or any decongestant. It makes me jittery and raises my blood pressure. The main ingredient is pseudophedrine (or something like that). If you have trouble with it, you might want to check all your cold meds. I don't think there is one that is OTC that doesn't have pseudophedrine in it. Try Mucafin or Mucinex or Robitussin Expectorant (yes even for a cold without a cough). These drugs will thin the mucous without the dangerous side effects.

I am doing so much better today!! I went to the pharmacy and bought some of the alka seltzer liquigels for colds. It does have the sudafed in it, but it is a smaller amount. It also had an antihistimine in it and tylenol for body aches. I feel like a new woman today!!

I think I am very sensitive to meds also. I would be a really bad crack head I think.

Cozmel I hope you are feeling better soon!!

I get a racy heart too...we are talking HIGH anxiety...from sudafed.
I never take it anymore.
For some reason, nyquil is fine (so is nightnurse, something I took when i was in the UK)...but I freaked out a nurse once the next day after taking it...my blood pressure went up.

I used to be able to take cold products containing pseudophedrine just fine, but about five years ago I became intolerant to it. I cannot take anything that has it in it at all (Tylenol Sinus, Sudafed, etc). The last time I took it I was awake for 48 hours with a racing heart from one dose. I have actually heard that a lot of people are unable to tolerate it.

When I have a cold, I take Robitussin (the plain kind, which is guaifenesin ONLY). Even though it says it is for cough, it thins ALL mucous, which means that it helps clear clogged up noses AND clogged up ears. If I also have a cough (chest cold), I use the Robitussin DM, which is guaifenesin and dextromethorphan (which is a cough suppresent and will help me sleep).

Actually, I have eustachian tube dysfunction and my ENT puts me on Rx guaifenesin to clear my ears, and it always clears my nose and stuff real well too, even when I am not sick.

Good luck! As someone who doesn't tolerate pseudophedrine, I know it can be hard to deal with colds.

StacieM,
You can now get guaifenesin 600mg tablets OTC. The brand name is Mucinex.

I used to use tylenol cold/night and day capsules but they quit making that i guess. So now my pharmacist recommended Contac cold and flu night and day and that seems to work for me.

Default Yes Sudafed sucks

Sudafed makes my heart race, and makes me very jittery. My pupils before very dilated. I suggest theraflu severe cold, the liquid is gross but it works. The pills aren't bad either.

I used to actually get somewhat of a "buzz" of off Sudafed when I would take it for my allergies. I jokingly called them my "happy pills" All I know is that the hours at work would fly by, I felt more up and happy... it was great!

Then I was diagnosed Bipolar Needless to say, that explains why Sudafed made me so happy! So add that to the conditions that if one has you should not consume the stuff if you can help it. It can send you straight into hypomania or destabilize you.

I normally have one or two sinus infections a season and haven't had a single one this winter. I feel this is due to taking N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC), which is not only good for PCOS and IR, but is a mucus thinner. Check out the "Alternative Therapies" board for more on that.

I'm glad you found something that works Rosie! The racing heart sounds scary!

Any of those "night time" medications make me absolutely out of my mind. I can't sit still, my thoughts race, my heart races, I pace, it's terrible. If you read the side effects part, it says "may cause agitation in some people". I am one of those people who gets terribly agitated.

I can't recall what the ingredient is that causes this, but if you look at a few packages, you will see the common factor to avoid. As long as the day time stuff doesn't have caffiene there should be no prob taking it at night.

Good luck!
