Does weight loss really make a difference to symptoms
I recently came off the pill and my body has went crazy once again with hair growth, acne etc. I don't want to go back on the pill so went to the doctor for advice.
The doctors solution was lose a stone (6kg). I lost weight before coming off the pill and at 5"4 I weigh 11 stone 3 (71kg). He said something about fat cells hold estrogen. He then said that if I lost some weight all my symptoms would go away.
My worry is that, althoough I will try and lose more weight, I already eat a healthy vegetarian diet and excercise most days. So I am wondering will losing this weight actually help my hair growth and acne. Has anyone else had success with atleast stopping their symptoms getting any worse with weight loss. Seems almost too simple to be true.
Losing excess 'body fat' (for cysters carrying excess body fat) is more important than just losing 'weight'.
And because of that, 'how' a person attempts to do this becomes important.
Losing 10 pounds (some of it being water, and some of it being lean mass), won't have the same positive impact that losing 10 pounds of body fat will have.
Kat's right. I've had excellent results on my symptoms with exercise (a combo of resistance and cardio training) and also with a low carb diet. My acne is gone, completely from every part of my body and extra appearance of facial hair as well as hair loss has stopped (I'm still stuck with terminal facial hair, but only laser/electrolysis seems to get rid of it).
So, overall exercise/healthy diet has been the best thing I've done so far to control my symptoms.

Losing weight sent my syptoms packing so to speak! I'm basically symptom free. In regards to acne I used to have it really bad (I have the scars to show it) and all over my face, especially the chin area and now I only get 1 or 2 pimples a month about a week before AF. In terms of hair, I started doing Laser treatments around the same time as I started losing weight so I can't really attest to weather the weight loss caused the cease in hair growth or if it was all due to the laser. Hope that helps some.

Mini Goal- 140- REACHED 7/28/08!!! New Mini Goal- 130! - REACHED 10/10/08!!! 27 years old- no meds- trying to get healthy through diet and exercise
Just adding that Kat is so on it with losing fat is the key! Adipose does strore more estrogen but it also causes havock on other hormones too...losing this said adipose (fat) will help things out.
In addition to losing the fat when I am exercising regularly (and, at the least, 1 hour per day) is when I notice the most results. For me, like many others, the measly 30 min. per day several days per week just does not cut it.

I don't want to get on my high horse, but I've followed a certain way of eating for a couple of months now (see my sig ). I've felt a lot better in myself, and my "beer belly" is shrinking even if the scales aren't budging much.
Symptom-wise I have a little of everything but my main problem is no AFs - I've had 2 EVER without being on the Pill (which I don't count as AF).
So this week I tightened up and dropped carbs to 50g or thereabouts a day.
And this morning.... AF!!!
So I guess what I'm saying is even if the scales don't move much, it's your body *composition* that matters. I truly believe that the low-carb way works for me, as one of my other AFs was after dental surgery, so a very odd diet then too
Exercise-wise, I do a lot of walking in daily life, to and from city centre, maybe 2-3 hours at a time but by no means every day. So if you're wary of jumping straight into marathon sessions, you may not need to

I don't have any new facial hair. I'v noticed some blond peach fuzz. The darker hair, I just pluck out and there's not much of that. I haven't noticed any difference in my scalp hair. Except with all the veggies and protein, it grows like crazy. I go it cut in April and it's down my back again! Not to mention, with exercise my energy is off the meter and I feel like a brand new person! Becoming healthier may have a different effect on you though. I say go for it! Lose 10 lbs and see what happens! It's worth a try!

I've got my trifecta of awesomeness... 5-6 training sessions a week that mix strength and cardion (CrossFit - LOVE it), a nutrient packed diet that supports my performance in the gym but not excess body fat and a regular sleep schedule. If all three things are in place, I'm feeling awesome and have no issues at all with my PCOS (all my labs come back normal). If I let one of them slide, all of a sudden, I'm not feeling so hot and I've got period weirdness going on. I'm down to 139 and some decent ab definition from 204lbs and a waist that was a big as my hips. It took a while to get healthy but it was definitely worth the time and effort.
