I had gastric bypass in 2004. Before my surgery I never got a period or ovulated on my own. We tried to get pregnant for almost 4 years and did two Clomid cycles, but nothing worked. My sugar/insulin was also so out of whack that my doctor told me I was only a few points away from being diabetic. Only a month after having my gastric bypass I began ovulating on my own and was able to get pregnant twice without any medical help at all. Also my sugars and insulin are now completely normal. I used to get the dark patches on my neck and I don't anymore. I also used to have to take high blood pressure and high cholesterol medicine and both are now in the normal ranges.

I had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass 13 months ago and my past 12 cycles have been every 27-31 days and before even provera/prometrium didn't always bring it on much less have one on my own. I also believe I am ovulating for the first time by myself but we're not TTC just yet.

I had RNY in June 2007 .. since then I have lost 128 lbs and over 57 inches.
I can see a difference in things too... I have more *normal* cycles than I did before WLS. They are still pretty far apart, but at least I am having af on my own (seems weird to want it...lol)
My hair growth is still a problem, but I also took biotin for about 8-9 months after having surgery so I'm not sure how much that played a factor in things. I had a laser treatment about a month ago which has helped a lot, so we'll see how things go from there. Right now the hair growth is better - but I still have some.
My cholesterol is normal now.
According to my BMI I am now "normal"
Hope I helped with some of your questions.

Hi Amanda! Lovely name BTW...I'll be naming my daughter that when she comes into the world in about 3 more months. Anyway I'm 4 years post op RNY gastric bypass and having my WLS has GREATLY improved my PCOS symptoms. In fact I've gone from severe symptoms to nearly symptom free.
Pre WLS:
no cycles (not even provera helped much)
no ovulation (even with Clomid or injectables)
infertility
facial hair aka hirsutism
acne
obesity
skin tags
To...
regular 30ish day cycles
regular ovulation
quite fertile (was able to get pregnant 2x both the 1st month ttc)
rare acne
no new skin tags
facial hair got a little better but definitely stopped getting worse
In addition to those my tesosterone and other hormone levels are all normal now. I also had severe IR and diabetes both of which are gone now. My fasting insulin went from the mid 90s to normal and my diabetes went away almost immediately. My endocrinologist declared my diabetes officially cured by 6 months after surgery. Also related to my weight I had high blood pressure & severe obstructive sleep apnea. I stopped using my CPAP machine for the sleep apnea 2 months after surgery & was weaned off of my blood pressure medication. Unfortunately for me my blood pressure issues did come back at 2 years 3 months post op and I'm back on meds but it's VERY easily controlled now as opposed to before.
My pregnancies have not needed progesterone supplementation and have been 'textbook'. My OB did allow me to do a modified gestational diabetes test as I'm on the more extreme side of sugar intolerance and that drink would make me very ill. I was not gestational diabetic with my daughter and although I've not yet tested this pregnancy I doubt I will be this time.
If you have more questions PLEASE feel free to come by the WLS Divas thread on the diet & exercise buddies forum.
I hope this information helps!

First I have to say you are already making a huge step. You've admitted you have a weight problem and that you might need help losing it.
It's a hard step - I had a long hard fight with myself over WLS. It took forever for me to get over the fact that I couldn't lose weight on my own. I worried I was taking the easy way out. I also worried about what people around me would say, and how they would treat me.
I chose to have the gastric bypass "Roux-en-Y" (RNY). It was the surgery both I, and my surgeon felt would help me the best. There are several different surgery options out there now, as well as surgeons all over the place preforming them. Make sure you look into both your surgeon, and your surgery options before making your choice.
Pre-op I was your typical PCOSer. I was borderline diabetic, insulin resistant, I had really bad excess facial and body hair in the places I wanted none, and thinning hair where I wanted some. I also had severe Irritable Bowel Syndrome (basically non stop trips to the bathroom). Finally I have a spine that is dead set on murdering me, whether I want it to or not, I have degenerative disc disease with my lower lumbar spine fused together, and severe nerve damage in both of my legs from it. My highest weight was 297 pounds, and I'm 5'4ish. I was wearing size 26/28 clothing that was tight and a 48DD/DDD bra.
My main reason for having my WLS was that I want to have kids, adoption is always an option as well, BUT I also wanted to be around to watch my childrens children grow up. Also - my back problems were a major push for the surgery. Having all that extra weight on me was not helping the problems with my spine in any manner.
My surgery was on December 6, 2007 - so less than a year ago. I weighed this morning at 160 pounds. I'm currently wearing size 14 shorts that are falling off of me, and have managed to button size 10 dress pants (not quite small enough to wear them yet, but almost there). I'm also now wearing a 38D bra. My pre-diabetes/IR is gone. Even the ugly brown/black stains on my neck, thighs, and underarms are gone. I did have a period of about two months where my hair fell out - quite a bit - it's a problem some people have post op, however it is now coming in fuller than ever, and healthier than I've ever had it. My extra hair in the wrong places isn't gone, but it is coming in slower and thinner all the time. I'm now also having regular cycles, at about 29 days.
Am I now fertile? I don't know, we aren't trying yet, still have a few months before we're allowed. Now though, I'm having a period all by myself (non-PCOSers don't get what a big deal that is). Pre-op though even with provera they weren't always able to get me to have a cycle, and if I did have one it was very very light and just spotting.
Is my back all better? No. At the same time, in February another disc decided it was giving up, and either ruptured or is bulging (they can't tell due to the metal already in my spine). BUT - in February I was 40ish pounds (at least) down - I can't imagine how much worse the new injury would have been if I still had all that extra weight on me. WLS can't fix my spine, but I know that things will get worse quicker the more weight that I have on me.
Would I go back and have the WLS again? In a heartbeat. I want to grow old with my husband, and hopefully my children. I have a scary family history of heart problems, diabetes, and severe obesity. I hope to avoid those if at all possible.
Feel free to check out the WLS Diva's thread - It's in the Diet/Exercise forum, in the Diet/Exercise Buddy area. We would all be more than happy to share our stories with you, and any info we can help you with. Also - there are all sorts of websites dedicated to WLS. You can also do a google for WLS and diabetes and find a great deal of information. Right now there is strong proof that WLS can eliminate diabetes and a ton of research being done on those topics. The same thing applies for WLS and PCOS. Another site for information is ObesityHelp.com. It's a site dedicated to helping people overcome obesity and the various options. There are forums by state and location where you can read other peoples experiences with various surgeons, surgeries, and hospitals. People there are also more than happy to share their stories with you.
Sorry I rambled so much, hope some of this was useful.

You are all amazing!! First of all, thank you so much for sharing your stories. I am only 5'1" and weigh 220 lbs. I suffered from bulimia throughout my teens and have a stomach that had stretched so far, I don't think that it will ever come back without some serious help. After finally admitting to myself and my Dr that I can't do this alone and that I need help (a big step for me) I am ready to change my (and my husband and daughter's) life, but learning how to eat healthy and exercise. I go for a surgical consultation next Tuesday...wish me luck
Again, thank you so much for all your help and information.
For those of you that have had babies...congrats and for those of you are still trying or haven't started trying yet....the best of luck to you all. You will be amazed at the blessing you receive.

There's plenty of diet support here on the soulcysters boards, and I've started a new area for 'fitness-minded' cysters here: http://www.FitCysters.com
No matter what your choice of fitness - be it Walk Away the Pounds or training for a marathon, you'll fit right in if 'getting in shape' is your goal!!

Hi! I just recently had WLS ( in Jan 08) and I'm waiting hopefully and anxiously for my cycles to once again resume, and also to start ovulating! Nothing yet, but I have high hopes that once the metformin I've begun taking starts to circulate in my system, I'll be reproductively healthy!!!!
I had WLS February 2005. I have lost 250 pounds from highest weight.
I have PCOS, but my periods are regular now, and I ovulate on my own. I had some laser, so my facial hair is more manageable.
I went to the RE to TTC, because I didn't want to waste any time if I had a problem. I do have low progesterone after I ovulate, so I am happy I went. If I don't get pregnant w/n 2 cycles I will try IUI.
My insulin resistance is gone, but I also eat low carb now, low GI if I cheat. So, I'm sure that helps.

Amanda - How did your surgical consult go? I agree with the article that Kat provided you in that exercise is key to being a successful post op whether you've had RNY, lapband, VSG or DS. Many post ops who begin to regain weight 2+ years after surgery typically aren't working out on a regular basis.
Angela - Good luck with ttc!

I have never had a regular cycle unless I was on Birth control pills. Since WLS RNY 7 months ago I get my cycle every 28 days. It sucks too now have it so often. lol I got spoiled and would go a month and a half. It now feels like I just finnished and it is back again. I do want to try for another baby so 28 day cycle is a good sign.
