I recently started exercising again using my elliptical, but found it's very hard for me to continuously go for more than 10 minutes. So what I've been doing is 10 minutes, short 2 - 3 minute break, then 10 minutes again etc. I do 3 of them per night so I'm getting 30 minutes.
Today I also did 10 minutes after lunch and still plan to do my 30 minutes later.
But my question is, does this work the same or do you need at least 30 minutes of continuous exercise? I try not to let my heart rate fall too much during my 2 - 3 minute breaks.

its better than not doing anything at all...... with that said, if its cardio for weight loss or for actual weight lifting/toning, then no way. becazuse u have to keep usuing your muscels to tear them up, so that they can build more. but i dont think that taking a 2-3 min break is really going to affect it that much, i it was an hour, then it would be a diffrent story.

I think what you're doing is great! Actually, by taking short breaks in between your 10 minute intervals, you're likely hitting those 10 minute bursts with more intensity than if you were to try to stick to a pace that you could maintain for the full 30. Keep up the good work!

I don't think that taking a 2-3 min break inbetween intervals will have a negative effect on your workout. That being said, it would probably work the best if you are doing something like walking lightly in place during the 2-3 min break. Sounds like you are doing great though!

What you are doing is good! I do want to ask... Are you stopping because you are out of breath? Or because you legs are sore?

Girl you are at least doing something! I think long as you get 30 minutes in you are good. If you think about it when we go to the gym and do the regular exercise we slick take those small breaks. So keep doing what you do and I need to get on the same track as you!

Both really, I'm working up quite a sweat and I feel like my legs get numb (which I read is common with an elliptical).
I was able to make 15 minutes last night though, so I did 15 minutes and then took a couple minute break to drink water and was back on for 15 minutes. Felt great!

You know, come to think of it I have done several aerobics videos that do the same. For example there will be 10 mins or so of high intensity steps and then there will be 2 mins of walking in place. Congrats though on upping your time by 5 mins! That is HUGE with an elliptical!

Wow, I never knew it was common to have numb feet on the elliptical! (I just googled it)
If you're looking for some structured intervals (which will get your fitness up in no time!) you could try Cardio Coach. Its mp3s you listen to while you're on cardio machines and you work through intervals based on your heart rate.

Wow... numb feet with the elliptical is normal? I thought I just had nerve conduction issues. HAHAH!!!!
I usually did "intervals" of sorts... I'd go hard for as long as I could, then back WAY off until I was almost recovered, then do it again. I didn't stop entirely, just slowed way down.

Of course it's fine! Eventually you'll build your fitness up enough to do the thirty minutes straight through. You've already improved your fitness by making it to 15...just keep on keeping on.
One thing that I've found helps my numb feet is going in reverse for a minute or so. However, I've been training a lot so I no longer that horrible feeling.
Yeah when I first started getting the numb feet it freaked me out, I had heard of your arm going numb during a heart attack and I was literally thinking I was having some major heart problems till I googled it.
lol
