Hi we are looking into domestic adoption right now.
I have been looking for agencies around my area in Illinois.
But we live right on the border of Missouri. So my question is do you have to stay with an agency in your state or can it be from another state.
I figured I would have to find someone in Illinois and that is becoming more difficult that I originally thought.
I had no idea the process involved in adoption. You are all such brave women.
Thanks

I'm not really sure about your adoption agency question but I have a great book that you should take a look at!
Adopting in America
How to Adopt Within One Year
By: Randall B. Hicks (he's an adoption attorney)
It has some great info in it about adopting (even though we're adopting internationally, there's some great info in there about that too)
It does say for IL: 70% of IL infant adoptions are completed via independant adoptions; 30% via agency. Advertising is permitted. To file a Petition for Adoption w/in IL the adopting parents must reside there, usually for a min. of 6 months prior to the filing of the Petition for Adoption. If it is an agency adoption, the Petition for Adoption can additionally be filed w/in IL if the adoption agency having custody of the child is located there. Normally, adoptions are finalized 6 months after the placement of the child w/ the adoptive parents. The adoptive parents & the child are usually required to appear in court for the final hearing.
There's a lot more written about it as well as a listing of adoption attorneys & private adoption agencies.
For MO it says that either the adoptive parents, birth mother, or child must reside there. Adoptions are finalized 7 months after placement & the adoptive parents & the child have to appear in court for the final hearing.
HTH's!
Good Luck!

I did find out I have to use DCFS that is in our county, or one that handles our county. We have chosen one and she is meeting with us on the 23rd to talk about all of our options and to make sure this step is for us (foster to adopt).
Thanks for all your replies!!

Hi Tracy,
I don't post over here much these days, but I saw your post and just had to respond. I remember you so well from the years I spent on the ttc board and I just wanted to let you know that I think it is great that you are choosing the adoption option. Our Alex has been home with us for 8 months and he is the light of our lives. I hope your adoption process goes smoothly and that soon you will be holding your little one in your arms. Keep us updated...
Hugs,
janie

I'm gonna stop looking back and starting moving on
And learn how to face my fears
Love with all of my heart, make my mark
I wanna leave something here
Go out on a ledge, without any net
That's what I'm gonna be about
Yeah, I wanna be running
When the sand runs out
- Rascall Flatts "When the Sand Runs Out"
The meeting went very well. We did learn a lot. WE have a lot of paper work to fill out. And a lot of money to save up for. The cost is going to be around $10,000, oh and I did find out we can do straight adoption. Before I was thinking we had to do foster/adopt through them. I am torn between going ahead with this or waiting for we can try a few more attempts with IUI donor sperm.
Right now we are saving money no matter what and things are hectic with work and me going back to school. so it has been put on the back burner, but definately always in our minds.
I think right now we are wieghing our options and seeing how we want to tackle this..
Thanks for asking!!
