BUMP. It's Census day, folks. Did you know that by law we are required to fill out and return out census form? I didn't know that. Mind you, they basically hound you with courtesy calls to get you to send it in, but Canada has a 97% compliance rate anyway, so it's not a huge issue.
Your census tells the powers that be where to build schools and fire stations and hospitals and things like that. Your local government gets funds based on the numbers that the feds receive in the census. So fill it out, either online or on paper and get it sent in!

Yay! I know that's not a standard response to the census, but it really is great in terms of research, so I was pleased to see this here. As a future librarian, it's also really important because census' can a) affect library funding; and b) help shape a library collection (ie. looking at age can determine amount of budget devoted to childrens lit/large print/etc; looking at language/cultural groups, particularly if one is growing in the area, can advocate a budget shift to books of that language/culture).
I know that library/community value is just a pindrop in what the census is worth overall, but I think it is pretty cool (nerd alert! lol)

Its funny you say that Ajani as I feel the same way...there is nothing like a long survey to fill out on a niteshift...which BTW I did mine last nite while on niteshift

I got the long census form too! And, I liked filling it out! I typically don't mind those things.
Now, on the other hand, filling out the forms for taxes is another story altogether...that's a real pain, but I'm way too cheap to have someone else do it for me, so I suffer through it and do it myself every year!!
I like filling out surveys and stuff too! I had mine done quite a while ago and kept forgetting to drop it in the mail. I think it was Friday that I finally got it sent away.
I hate the cesus people.
The fact that they use threats to intimidate people to fill out the forms is not right.
I am really getting annoyed at the fact that everytime I turn on the radio they threaten people who haven't filled it out and had I heard their stupd radio announcement prior to filling mine out I would have ripped up in tiny shreds and used it for cat litter.
Everytime I turn on 98.5 I hear their stupid announcement that starts off that you will be fined $500 if you don't fill out the census, yes they can fine you but using that to scare people into filling out their census isn't right. There were two other announcements that I heard awhile back but they have since stopped being aired.
I have no problem filling out forms and stuff but I really don't like that the government is using tactics that would be illegal if used by regular civillians.
That is ridiculous! People should fill them out because they want to..or at least kinda want to! Isn't it enough to tell them that it's required by law?
Here's the thing. I filled out my census form quite a while ago & sent it in, bought & got possession of a new house(which we are now renting) and filled out yet another one and sent it in, now we have moved to B.C. from Calgary and are temporarily renting till we find a place to buy. Tonight we come home to find a long census form jammed in our door with a note saying they will be here tomorrow to pick it up...do I have to fill out yet another one cause at this point I want to tell them to shove it.
I have done my deed and filled out the stinkin form but why the heck do I have to do it again & again.
Technically I am not even a B.C. resident yet since we only officially moved here a week ago. Grrrrr!
I tell you I hate these people more and more each day!
You should only fill out one census form. It is meant to be an accurate representation of the population on the specific day of the census. If you fill out more than one, you will be counted more than once.
I was a census taker many years ago and we had to make sure that people who were moving filled out their form where they lived on the day of the census.
I think at this point you need to go higher up than the local census people and tell them you have already filled one out. Try going to the government website to figure who to talk to.

Thanks Martha.
I have called their 1-800 many, many times now and haven't been able to reach anyone. I think checking out their website is a great idea.
Thanks again.
