Hi ladies,
I joined the site in june but haven't really posted much so I still feel like a newbie!
I'm basically just looking for a bit of advice from UK cysters, I 'kind of' got diagnosed a couple of years ago, I saw a terribe specialist who was not sympathetic in any way! And had to arrange scans etc. for myself, then I had to trace down the results myself for my doc, and she said it looks like i have pcos, and all she can tell me to do is loose weight! And didn't even bother to put it on my records so i have to explain it to every new doc i see!
Rant over with, I just feel at the end of my teather! I'm not on any medication at all, I feel things are getting worse.. the main thing that bothers me is i haven't had a period in two or three years and now i feel i'm getting more hair etc which i never really suffered with before!
I just wondered what you UK ladies are taking or not taking.. is medication actually helpful? I'm keeping on top of my diet by being 'sensible' i'm a veggie so most of my food is pretty healthy any way and i do a bit of excercise but cant shift any weight! I'm finding this whole thing a bit emotional so a bit worried about going back to see a doctor because i know they will just send me off to loose weight!!
welcome to sc if i had £1 for every time a dr has told me to loose weight, i would be rich by now
good idea to go back to your dr. Can you see a different dr if the last one wasnt helpful?? what id suggest is to write down everything that you want to ask/say to your dr so you dont forget.Thats what i always do.

Thanks for the reply, writing things down is a really good idea! I find this whole thing quite upsetting so I think if i get fobbed off again I might be too upset to fight my corner! So now I can write things down as i think of them and then make the appointment when I'm ready!
i get sick of the doc telling me the same thing and unfortunatley every doc in my surgery does too! Its laughable really that there seems no definitive shoulder to cry on... i stopped going to the hospital because the consultant i saw was naughty... i was prescribed a cream and when i took it to the pharmacy i was told it wasnt even on the approved pct... tut tut.. and now im told that laser treatment is not available on the nhs because it's cosmetic... jeee just what i always wanted to wake up with a beard... quiet distressing having to shave your chin on your wedding day! i dunno.. change docs?? im loosing all faith in my quacks xx

I recently changed surgery because I moved and wouldn't you know, in my new surgery my new doctor (a woman, coincidentally - that may be a factor in sympathy!) was brilliant. I was on no medication before, now I've just started on Metformin. Can you change surgeries?
Why do doctors treat pcos as a laughing matter? All I have read on this site is majority of docs who have no sympathy towards us pcos gals. There is plenty of info available through websites etc , so why do our doctors seem to have no idea of what to do to treat pcos. There should defo be more understanding and help being offered. I feel personally that my docs poo poo the idea that I have pcos as I have been told that I dnt look like a stereotypical pcos sufferer ie overweight. What do we need to do to get our point across grrrrrrrrrrrr magz xx
Hey ladies, i've had pcos for around 9 years, and none of the doctors iv seen ahve a clue about it!! I see a specialist now every 9-12 weeks and he still doesnt know as much as the ladies on here, They wont prescribe me anything except Metformin, and clomid. No progesterone incase mines low or anything. If it wasnt for my gals at SC id never have got my very first ovulation in 12 years back in april or my bfp, and i do believe if theyd listened to me about progesterone i may never have lost my baby at 12 weeks!!!! i know its all maybes but i really do believe they should learn alot more about pcos considerin so many of us have it!!!!!! ok rant over lol xxxxx

Thanks for replies everyone... I was hoping maybe some people would get on better than me and give me some hope in docs!!
I can see what you're all saying, i honestly feel like docs just don't want to learn about pcos, because you're right there are tonnes of websites and books with info, and even if they listened to their patients they could learn a great deal! I think they all just still think not many of us have it so they just send us off to sort weight out (if it's an issue) and then don't bother with us any more!
I once found a great doctor, she seemed to know loads and loads about it, but she was a temp, so never seen her again! I think i'm going to try appointments with the different docs at my surgery and if none of them know anything i'll sign up to another one!
I appreciate they can't know everything.. but a few i've seen don't even know the basics!
Bit of another rant, sorry ladies! Hope you all find some sucess soon
Think I will follow the advice of trying diff docs in my surgery and if I dont have any success I will try another surgery.I wouldn't mind so much if the cysts in my ovaries didn't really affect me but , they do i have depression ,hirsutism (facial and body), my periods are all over the place. So with all that in mind and the fact that I had an ultrasound nearly 4 yrs ago that showed I have cysts in my ovaries ,WHY WONT MY DOC LISTEN TO ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!GGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR it makes me so bloody angry .Magz xxxxx
I've been lucky to have a doctor (female!) who saw me throughout my depressive stages. Okay, so it was my mum who found out about PCOS and told the doctor to see if I had it or not... But yeah. She booked me in for the US scan and the blood test and gave me a leaflet on a low-GI diet. Not as helpful as this site, perhaps, but PCOS didn't seem to come as a surprise to her and I got my diagnosis.

Im currently on metformin, and nothing else for my pcos, my doctor doesnt want me on any bcp's because of my weight and also i have high blood pressure, but at the same time he seems obsessed about me being on some form of contraeception because i have a boyfriend *rolls eyes*. Im waiting to be refered to the laser hair removal clinic but that is taking a while also.
The reason why progesterone isnt widely used in the UK is that there is new evidence to suggest that the progesterone that american doctors give newly pregnant women in the US isnt really going to make a difference if the pregnancy isnt meant to be then any amount of progesterone isnt going to help. Whether you believe that or not is a different matter but there is more and more evidence to suggest this, i know that progesterone suppositories are used for IVF women in the UK so i know it is avaliable but that is because their hormones are messed about with anyways in their IVF cycles. So it is avaliable in the UK.
I know its hard, when there is soo much information about pcos on the web but our doctors dont seem to listen, yes ok there are some out there that could do just do with brushing up with their research, but there is soo much conflicting information on the net that it would be foolish for the doctors to rely on this for treating patients especially if this went wrong. People would then complain and sue the doctors for using stuff off the net. The simple fact is that until there is more research done on PCOS that is widely accepted the only things we can do is suggest things to our doctors but dont expect them to use what we suggest as its really hard for them to help us being wrapped up in red tape with everything.
Im not sticking up for the doctors i can just see it from their point of view they cant always help not because they dont want to just simply because they are not allowed to due to legislation.
Hopefully we will all get the hope we deserve soon Good Luck all

Thanks for replies everyone... I was hoping maybe some people would get on better than me and give me some hope in docs!!
Heya I think I can do that for you, I was never one for visiting my dr I just used to let things sort themselves out (I know silly) but hey I now have a amazing immune system apparently as I never took antibiotics till I was 18 anyhooo moving swiftly on, I decided enough was enough I had to sort out my irregular periods, I wasn't TTC at that time just wanted to know why. The female dr said ill send you for bloods and have a look, anyhoo I went back a week later and saw a male dr he looked at my blood work and went its all normal BUT...the he hit me with it you may be suffering from PCOS I had no idea what it was he printed something out and gave me a leaflet I was not impressed with this leaflet so demanded he speak to me not print something out, so he did he explained everything in great detail more than the leaflet and booked me in for a US 2 weeks later the scan confirmed I had pcos, me my partner and the dr all sat down and discussed it he referred me to a specialist called Lisa who after our first appointment booked me in for my lap and dye operation. I recently had that done my tubes were clear and on the day of my discharge was given clomid which i finish taking today on CD6
I think my Dr's did their utmost to confirm and help me understand PCOS I am grateful to them within less than a year I am being helped and treated by the NHS. My dr's have offered my counselling and my female dr form the gp always says if you just want a chat to come in and we can see what’s going on and your progress. I am young only 19 but I have other problems that mean I have to try young. At 19 being told you should think about having children is a eye opener, luckily I am in full time employment and head of a finance department so i am financially stable and mine and Daniels relationship is amazing
I think you really do have to find the right DR or make yours understand like i did by telling him he wasn’t getting away with giving me some bloody leaflet lol.
Best wishes
Sa xXx
