I just read that Johnson and Johnson are being sued because the patch causes pulmanary embolisim. The report from Johnson and Johnson said that is has just become aware of it.
I never cared for the patch anyway. I could never get it to stay in the same place, and as it would slide around clothes lint would stick to the adhesive. Yuck!
I read on yahoo a while back about a woman who died from the patch. I'll try to find the link. It scared me because it mentioned her having sever headaches, and that was the reason I stopped using the patches.
Hugs
Julie

Yeah, I had to interject here... that's a risk you take with ANY form of hormonal birth control. Speak from experience, I got a DVT, that would have turned into a PE if my Dr. hadn't been so on the ball. So, yeah, while the patch may "cause" PE's, its to be expected, and its listed right there on the box as a potentially deadly side effect.
The main point of the lawsuit was that there is a statistically higher risk of PE/DVT w/ the patch than with oral contraceptives.
I stopped using the patch because it made my heart race and gave me terrible headaches. So glad I stopped. It wasn't the right choice for me, but many people like it! Everyone is different I guess.
The patch, from what I understand, produces REALLY high blood levels of estrogens, which tend to thicken the blood. Even natural high estrogen states, like pregnancy, increase risk of blood clots. But it's probably worse with the patch than pills because the levels are so high.

Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.
just another 2cents, I was on the patch for 2 years after trying every pill on the market. Granted it didnt stick as well as I would have prefered, but I love it. I didn't gain weight, I didn't have terrible mood swings, but most of all I had a regular period that all the pills could not provide for me. Also, I believe the risk of PE, blood clotting is why all docs say to not smoke while you are on BC of any sort. B/c that too will increase your risk.
Good luck though!

I was on the patch for a while about 2 years ago and just went back on. I had problems with it itching and not staying in place as well as I would like until I just started putting it on my upper arms every time. There, it never itches and works perfectly.
And it's true that any kind of BCP heightens the risk of blood clots. A friend's fiancee died from that a few years back (before I met him). That's why you're not supposed to smoke.

Mini goal: 155 lbs, back to a healthy BMI by 2006!
I too am using Ortho Evera and I couldn't imagine life without it. I started taking BCP's in my teens because of irregular AF's and could never remember to take the dumb thing every day. Plus they made me incredibly queasy and tired when I did take it. In my late teens through mid twenties I started taking depo in the hopes that it would be better for me since I always forgot to take the pill. Well 7 years on Depo really screwed me up. I rarely AF, I gained a ton of weight and most of all, it disguised my PCOS. Only after I got married and got off of depo and started TTC did I finally find out I had PCOS and that Depo wasn't a good BC option for me.
But to all of the posters who gave their opinions, you are right, everyone has a preference on BC options and no 2 people will like the same product. The common goal is to find one, should you chose to use BC that's right for your body and lifestye. My only complaint with the patch is pretty much like everyone elses, once lint gets on it, it's yucky..
