Default Dosage Concern

So I noticed my doctor gave me 12 months of medicine. take 1 pill a day with milk or food. 500 MG. From what I keep reading most people get there dosages up till about 1500 MG. Should I talk to my doctor about this. I have to go the office on Friday to get a shot. Which is in her practice. Small. Womens Health Clinic through the VA. Plus while I am there I want to find out about that referal she put in for me.

Hello,

If you're new to metformin, I would try the lower dose first for a couple of weeks to see if you get any longer term side effects (upset tummy that doesnt clear up after a few days). You could then approach your doctor to up the dose. No point asking until you know whether the met suits you.

If you dont feel confident about asking for a higher dose, maybe print off some reputable research on PCOS and met doses from the net in case you want to provide evidence for your request!

Good luck with met....and your doctor if need to go back!

The dosage varies from person to person. I had a horrible experience when I first started taking metformin and had to go slowly. I started with 250mg for several weeks, then 500mg for several months, and then settled with 1000mg which I have taken for about four years now. I always take it once a day.

I wanted to add that just because you have a prescription for 12 months at 500mg doesn't mean you're locked into that dose. I started off at 1000mg a day and all my doc did was call my pharmacy to up my dose and give me more pills when my dose was increased!! This isn't hopeless! And don't rush things...give your body time to adjust
