Default Dosage question...

I was recently dx'd with Hypothyroidism and was put on 50mcg of Synthroid. I go in 2 weeks to get blood drawn to see what my levels are. When I first started on Synthroid, after a few days, I already saw a difference. I felt better and I wasnt as tired (I also started taking Vit B12 at the same time so that could be part of it as well) but now I am starting to feel the same as I did before. Just crappy. I'm tired (Still taking B12) and have no energy. Did any of you experience this when you needed a dosage change? Maybe I need to go to a higher dose? Maybe my body got too used to this one in a short amount of time? I've only been on it for about 5 weeks.

Hi, SoSilly! You might need to be on a higher dose, if you are still experiencing a lot of fatigue. Your doctor will be able to tell from your blood work if your levels are still off, and he/she should adjust your dosage accordingly. I was always told that it takes around 6 weeks for your body to fully adjust to a new dose of thyroid meds. It's so hard to wait it out when you are feeling bad; but, increasing your dose too quickly can have some undesirable side effects. Best of luck!

I have been on Synthroid for 5 years now and although my tsh levels were fine I began feeling tired again. I read some articles by Mary Shomon on the internet and it was suggested that adding supplements to your daily vitamin regimen will make a difference about how you feel and it worked for me! I have a lot more energy now than I did 7 months ago before I started. Along with my daily vitamin I take Selenium, Vitamin E, D, C, B complex, fish oil, & L-Lysine. Some people add Zinc and Magnesium too for thyroid, but this concoction seems to work for me so I'm not messing with it! Most of the supplements are water soluble, but the E and D vitamins are fat soluble (meaning your body will store them even if you don't need them) so it's always a good idea to be on the look out for any symptoms that might suggest you are taking too much of those.

I could be you do in fact need a higher dose. You probably started feeling better at first because your body was all excited it was getting some thyroid hormone in it! But then realized it wasn't enough and you started feeling poopy again. It can take several tries to get your dose right.

Good luck!

Cynthia

For the longest time I was on 88mg Synthroid and felt ok..not great. I had my days of being overly exhausted. Although my TSH was normal my doc kicked me up to 125mg and this is the best I ever felt. Tell your doc how you feel and suggest getting a slightly higher dosage.
