Dr. Glueck is the self-proclaimed PCOS expert who at the time I went to see him (5 yrs ago) was prescribing dangerously high doses of Metformin to his patients. I call him self-proclaimed because on my first visit to him he actually told me that he was the leading PCOS expert in the country. While under his care, he had me taking 800 mg 3 times daily. I took the medicine as prescribed and followed the meal plan; however I was having severe dizziness and my blood sugar was dropping to dangerously low levels (in the 20’s and 30’s) (as a side note, my mother went to him also and had the same symptoms). When I told Dr. Glueck about this, he said that it was impossible for Metformin to make your blood sugar drop and that I must not be following the meal plan. I insisted to him that this was not the case but he didn’t listen and kept me on the same dosage.
On my last visit to him, I again told him my blood sugar had become unstable since taking the Metformin and that I had never had low sugar problems before. He arrogantly insisted that this was impossible and wrote off what I was saying. It was at that time that I realized I needed a second opinion from my family doctor, Dr. Guisinger (a good doctor in the Columbus, OH area and the one who found and diagnosed me with PCOS).
While driving to see Dr. Guisinger, I was having tunnel vision and dizziness. When I arrived, the nurse took my blood sugar and it was so low that it didn’t even register on the machine. She thought maybe the machine was faulty so she took it again and it registered 21. She was floored and told me it was a miracle that I had not slipped into a coma. When I met with Dr. Guisinger, he stated that I must have gotten used to functioning with the low blood sugar. He also told me that his worse diabetic patients weren’t on the dose of Metformin that Dr. Glueck had me on and he immediately put me on a program to come off of it. He also told me that if I had stayed on that amount of Metformin for a long period of time it would have eventually burned out my pancreas.
All this to say, I have never stepped foot into Dr. Glueck’s office since. I haven’t seen him in over 5 yrs so it’s possible that he practicing differently; however, I would highly caution anyone considering going to him because I doubt he’s lost his arrogance. Since going to see Dr. Glueck and trying a myriad of other treatments (extreme low carb diets, Progesterone creams, vitamins and herbal supplements), I have found the only real way to deal with the PCOS is the hard way… a balanced diet and exercise. This has been hard because I wanted an easy fix and I spent 5 years searching for answers only to come back to the reality that most of my problem was poor eating and exercise habits. I am now doing the SparkPeople program. It’s a sensible diet and exercise program that’s online and free (
www.sparkpeople.com). It’s too soon to tell how I’ll do but I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen so far. Hope this helps.
