Unhappy dr just gave me met. should i take it?

Dr gave me met to take. 500 mg each day. But he didnt go over anything w/me and the only test he did was last year and it tested the hormone levels. He didnt even have my records when he gave this to me. he didnt even want to have me come in again for any tests and it seems from my reading on here that most drs keep track of everything when you are on Met. Should I take it? I have read so much bad stuff....hair loss and bunch of other stuff. I am scared to take it now. i have full blown pcos....didnt have period for over 6 years now i spot every day, have serious problem w/hair on my face and body, and am over weight and have to eat around 800 cals or less to lose. Can gain when i eat 1000 cals. If anyone could give me feedback on met...good or bad...i would be very thankful. I need help. BAD!

Honestly, find another DR if you are not comfortable. He may be able to tell from your history that Met is a good choice.

I agree with dolphintatoo. Perhaps a 2nd opinion would ease your mind. Also, there are several posts on this forum on metformin. Most of them are "sticked."

I would find a doctor that you are comfortable with and that communicates with you. That being said you couldn't pry my metfromin away from me

I have had doctors who run blood work all the time and doctors who just go by symptoms... it used to be that there was a lot of concern about met and liver function but this concern seems to have fallen by the wayside so I think a lot of docs don't run bloodwork as much looking for problems. My current doc does BW every 3 months but I think that is because I am on avandia now, too... he will probably stop when I have been on it for a year.

In light of how many of us have to jump through hoops and convince our docs our bloodwork is bad enough to warrent met... your complaint is really kind of ironic.

Based on symptoms alone, I think you may very likely find the met to be helpful... maybe that's how your doctor sees it, too.

But I agree if you aren't comfortable, get a second opinion.

thanks for all the advice girls. it really helps. My dr is really nice and good about a lot of stuff...i guess i just got scared when i read all the bad side affects. lol I dont like taking meds so guess i just let the neg. stuff over shadow the good stuff. But after reading your replys i do feel better. I took my first one tonight. As a Christian I believe in prayer so i am just praying that met gives me all the good benefits w/out getting the bad side affects. Oh i can handle the food aversion etc...that will help me lose weight ...i just dont want any of the other stuff. And it is ironic that my dr gave it to me so readily if for some of u it was really difficult to get. Guess God just opened that door for me. So thanks God! And thanks to all who gave me their thoughts. i am thankful.

I agree with the above or you can ask your DR if he will do blood work every 3 months while you are on it for peace of mind as that is how often most drs will check you

Didnt have any side affects last night over taking my met pill. Took one again tonight...prayed over it again so plan on it not making me sick again. Also maybe taking just 500 mg helps too.

Here's a little somethin' to help ease your mind about Met. I was diagnosed in Feb. of this year. Dr. presribed Met 500 mg. I read the warnings and got scared TO DEATH to take the stuff!! I didn't take my first Met pill until April. A week after I started my Met, a cloud lifted off of me. My thinking was clearer, I wasn't as hungry, I had panic attacks that disappeared (haven't had one since!!), and I have lost 34 pounds. Met has been my life saver and I truly believe this with all my heart. The only side-effects I had was an upset tummy the first week. That's all. I know people are different but I have never heard of anyone getting lactic acidosis or anything like that from Met. Honey, you should get a second opinion if that makes you feel better but don't be scared of the Met. I had NO symptoms of PCOS except excessive weight gain (90 pounds in 5 years)....always had regular periods, no strange body hair or skin tags....they diagnosed me simply on hormone levels. Do what is best for you bust I just wanted to let ya know that you are not the only one that was scared of Met....trust me!! If you ever wanna chat or anything, get me on my yahoo messenger, I would be happy to talk about it with ya. Take care and GOOD LUCK!!!!
