Is anyone else here a patient of Doctor Maria Kraw and St. Michael's Health Centre in Toronto? She's a reproductive endo and she's pretty great. I've only had one appointment but am going back soon. It's worth the trip from Ottawa. She is so knowledgable about PCOS. Anyway just wondering if anyone has been seeing her longer than I have and how their treatment has progressed with her.

I've heard wonderful things about her and I've seen her twice. She's very respectful and knowledgable and totally moral... I really like her. But I do live in toronto.
Are you following the creighton model, started by Dr. Hilgers?
Annemarie
Hey Liz: good luck with Dr. Kraw. I'm hopeful for you that she'll be able to help you because not only is she an RE, but she really understands Diabetes... that's one of her specialties... which as we know, insulin resistance is a big piece of PCOS... so good luck with her.

The Creighton Model is taught by practitioners. They learn the system and then teach it. People usually pay to learn the system, although they will waive the fee for hardship.
Dr. Hilgers from Omaha Nabraska is the one who started the Creighton system. He works out of a hospital called Pope Paul VI hospital in Omaha. Dr. Kraw learned a great deal from Dr. Hilgers as did all doctors who follow the creighton system, like Dr. Kraw does.
I don't know if you can learn the system long distance.
I'll do a search for you to find out if there's anyone in the Ottawa area teaching it.
Annemarie.

Creighton model is briefly explained in their website: http://www.fertilitycare.org/crms/index.html
Below are all the approved centres that teach the creighton model in Ontario. I found this information at the (above) creighton model website. .

apparantly there are practitioners in ottawa but its only through the catholic church and i really dont feel comfortable going to a pro-life setting when i am 100% pro-choice.

Liz: I think that you won't find any non Catholic, or at least non-Chrisitan teaching that system. My experience of the system is that they are fairly church based, even if the location isn't located in a church. All fertility care practitioners will be pretty much pro life because this is a system that was started and taught with the Catholic church rules on fertility in mind. I'm sure that you could just be honest with them and tell them that you disagree with the teachings but wanted to learn the system. Or don't tell them. It's kind of irrelevant when you're learning to observe. I'm sure they'd have no problem teaching you how to use the system. They aren't going to try and teach you all the rules and teachings of the Catholic Church when you are coming to learn a method of observing your cervical mucous. I just referred a woman around the corner from me to our local fertility care centre. She's Budhist. It's about fertility care... not moral/religious beliefs. These are some of the most careful doctors out there, and they've had to learn more because the Catholic Church doesn't allow some of the fertility care that exists in mainstream North American society. These doctors are learning how to treat so that Catholic woman won't feel pressured to use treatments that are against their beliefs. So... that means that these doctors are learning ways to treat the problems that exist in the woman's bodies so that their bodies will function.
Liz: it's almost impossible to learn the system properly if you don't go and get at least two or three lessons. But I can understand that if it feels uncomfortable, you wouldn't want to go. Do you have any other avenue? What ever you decide, I'm sure that something will come together. Did you tell Dr. Kraw about you discomfort? Perhaps she'd have a suggestion?
Annemarie
i havnt had another appointment since she suggested learn it, but my appointment is in a few weeks so ill talk to her then. i think i wouldnt mind if it was in a neutral setting like a health clinic, being taught by catholics, but i dont want to go into a church or catholic based place with anti-abortion propaganda all over the place. considering the fact that they have spit on me at pro-choice marches and whatnot you can understand my hesitation.
Have been DR.Kraw's patient for the last 2 years and she is the best. She is very knowledgeable (for PCOs, diabetes, TTC as well other medical issues). She is so caring and helpful and always listens to what I am saying.
As for Creighton's, have been using it for 3 years now. Would highly recommend learning it whether for TTCing or TTAing. Yes, it is mainly taught by Catholics and is very prolife, but you do not have to be Catholic to learn the method.
I'm not sure if you'll see this, since the message I'm responding to is quite old...
Anwyay, I found your post and this entire message board through a Google search. I was searching for Dr. Kraw at St. Mike's because I've just been referred to her for infertility issues. I'm glad to hear that you liked her and found her helpful. Have you seen her more than just the once? What specifically were you seeing her for?
My appointment isn't going to be until the fall. I'm still waiting for an appointment date.
Edited to add: I just read the rest of the thread and I'm also learning/using the Creighton Model. My practicioner just works out of her house, and asked me at the first appointment if I was Catholic and I answered that I am not, and that was the end of the discussion. I think the system is fantastic so far and I'd highly recommend it!

Reason: Additional information
I've seen Dr. Kraw a few times for infertility and she is a wonderful doctor. At each appointment she has taken her time with us and explained everything in detail. I have found her very helpful and she is very sensitive to couples who are experiencing infertility. I look forward to working with her to help us through this and hopefully we will be able to have a baby soon!
