Has anyone seen Dr. Legro for their PCOS? If so, what were your feelings about the level of care? Are you still being treated by him? Any and all information shared would be appreciated.
Are you talking about the Dr. Legro in Hershey, PA? If so, I saw him a few times about three years ago. My gyno referred me to him when he felt I had PCOS, but at this time, I was not ttc. Dr. Legro was great! He ran several tests, explained what the tests were, what my results meant regarding my PCOS. He was very understanding and up to date on all PCOS related issues. The only issue I had was I would often wait in the waiting room for over and hour to see the doctor. It also it can take a little bit of time to get an appointment with him, but he is worth the wait! I used to live in PA, but recently moved to Ohio. I am now ttc and seeing a new RE in Ohio, but I liked Dr. Legro much better. Hopefully we are talking about the same doctor!
Yes, Dr. Richard Legro. What kind of tests did he run to confirm or disprove that you had PCOS? what course of treatment did he prescribe? Did his course of treatment improve your symptoms? Did you end up participating in a study?
He ran all the standard tests for PCOS, unfortunately I don't know what they all were but I know some included, testosterone, dheas, insulin, lh, fsh, 2-hour glucose, etc. These were all blood work. I also did a 24 hour cortisone urine test, and an ultrsound. When I saw Dr. Legro, I was undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer. Dr. Legro recommended I go on birth control and take metformin and return when I was ready to ttc. I did not participate in any studies because I was living in Lancaster, Pa. It was too much of a time commitment for me due to the thryoid cancer and distance. My insulin did go down after taking the metforim and the birth control regulated my cycles. I really liked this doctor and would highly reccommend him.
Thank you Star876. I hope your new RE endo helps you get pg and that your cancer is under control. Was the 2 hour glucose test done on your first visit at his office? Which birth control pill did he place you on? How long after your first visit did you have to wait to come back and get a diagnosis? Once he placed you on bc and metforim did he have your gyno follow up with your care? I hope you do not mind my asking.
I was not able to take the 2-hour glucose test on the day of my appointment. They take two blood tests for the 2-hour glucose test, one on an empty stomach and the other after you have drank this sugar drink. The needs to be performed first thing in the morning, and my appointment with him was later in the day. I can't remember which birth control he put me, but if you prefer one over another, I'm sure he would consider the one you prefer. I waited maybe two weeks or so to come back and meet with the doctor to get my results. If you want your results sooner, the nurses are willing to give you them over the phone, well at least they did about 2 years ago when I was seeing him. The nurses do not always know the big picture, so I would wait to get your results from the RE so it is accurate. Yes, after my diagnosis he told me to follow up with my gyno and come back when ready to ttc.
The blood work including the two hour glucose test was performed at a lab at the hospital, not in the doctor's office. I did the blood work a few days after the appointment because the glucose test had to be done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. The ultrasound was conducted by the doctor, so I got those results as he was conducting the ultrasound. I don't remember which birth control he put me on, but I know it was one that contained lower levels of hormones. I came back maybe two or three weeks later to discuss the results with the doctor. I was able to get some of the results prior by calling the nurse in the office. However, the nurse doesn't always know the big picture, so I recommend waiting to get your results from the doctor.
I have an apt with him on Aug 27. I'm a little nervous to say the least. I stumbled across some neg feed back about him a few weeks ago and now I'm not sure if I should keep the apt. I went to a GP and she recomended that I see a RE I'm just not sure if he is the one. I biggest concern is that my husband and I are wanting to have a child but are not ready at this point in time (hopefully in about 2 years). I haven't had a cycle in almost 3yrs and haven't see a doc due to lack of insurance. Lets face it not having a monthly visitor is nice until you want to have a baby. I know this is going to have to change if I'm ever going to get pregnant. I'm afraid that all he will do is put me on birth-control if I don't want to conceive immediately. I'm not a big fan of it and would rather avoid it all together. What did you think of his bedside maner? Was he willing to listen to your questions and give fully understandable answers? I would also like to treat things as naturally as possible. Does he support this? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
I really liked Dr. Legro. I highly would recommend him. He had very good bedside manners. I also saw him a couple of years before I was ready to become pregnant. I was sick of not knowing why my body was not "working normal." Dr. Legro ran all the PCOS tests and officially diagnosed me. Have you had these tests done? It is important to get these done and especially important to have these done with a well educated PCOS doctor. If the blood work is sent to a lab that does not routinally check for things like testerone in women, the lab results can be off, this happened to me with my gyno.
On the otherhand, Dr. Legro pushed for birthcontrol. I felt the same as you did. I wanted to solve the problem, not cover it up by taking BC and pretend that it doesn't exisit. It's been about two years since seeing Dr. Legro and I better understand the importance of taking BC for women with PCOS. It is the only med that really keeps are hormone levels in check.
If you haven't been officially diagnosed, I would at least see Dr. Legro for the diagnosis. Then, if you chose so, move on to a different type of doctor that will help you handle your pcos in a natural way.
I have an appointment with him next week to discuss TTC. I'm worried because he is so well known in his field, he won't have time to properly care for me through this infertility journey. Any thoughts on this?

hi, i was in a study with legro down in hersey in the mid 90's
he is THE expert in pcos infertility
he's also a compassionate caring doctor
he understands the weigh issues, and he really really is there for his patients
that's why the waits to see him are so long
he always took the time to talk at length each time i was there.
he would reassure me that the hair growth was normal, that i wasn't a freek
i wish he would do post-menopausal pcos patients, as that is where i am now
