I see my gyn, Dr. Denise Hartman, who works with Abington Women's Primary Health Care group. There are offices all over Bucks county (and I think Montgomery County as well). When I move to NJ I plan on driving back to see her regarding treatment for PCOS and anything else. She's the best and worth the trip, in my opinion. She answers e-mails, she makes phone calls, and she follows up on how I'm feeling and how things are going. She seems to me at times like a very knowledgeable friend than a doctor. She's great.

I went to see Dr. Sherif in 2003 (that's where I was diagnosed) but I only ever saw assistant after assistant, never Dr. Sherif herself. I wasn't happy with that kind of push-off relationship.

I just have to put my plug in about Dr. Katherine Sherif since I'm one of her patients. She is very good and is extremely knowledgeable about PCOS. She mostly concentrates on the internal medicine aspect of PCOS such as high cholesterol, heart conditions, diabetes, depression and anxiety, research oriented stuff, and less on the ttc area. Her colleague Dr. Minassian, whom I also see, is awesome. He looks at ttc for each of his patients as a challenge that he is willing to take on, and he's had plenty of successes to prove it. I'm not ttc yet, but he is willing to work with me when that time comes. And, I sure don't want to move out of the area when I'm ready lol!

Getting an appointment with either one of them is difficult though because they are so popular. I will see Dr. Sherif as a yearly visit for hormonal blood work checks and whatever pertinent issues I may have at the time. They both are great to work with, since they did not dismiss my signs and symptoms and able to confirm them. If it wasn't for them, I would of been bounced from doctor to doctor right now, deemed as psychotic and given bcps to shut up again!

Just wanted to add some additional info for y'all. There are some wonderful docs all over Philly. Another doc in Elkins Park is Dr. Birnbaum, who has done extensive reserach in PCOS and Dr. Deborah Driscoll at U of P has been doing a lot of genetic research!!! LAstly if you want a more natural approach, you could try Dr. Abagael Lorico who does accupuncture for PCOS and is also an OBGYN!!! If you have a doc who is really really good, let me know, I am looking for speakers

I have just accepted the role of PCOS Coordinator at The PCOS Center @ Drexel's Center for Women's Health in Philadelphia. I will be coordinating educational and support meetings and events that are open to all patients with PCOS. We willbe having speakres from all over the NJ, PA and De areas

Our schedule is filling up already. which I am thrilled about, we ahve soem terrific topics and speakers.

Please stop by our meetup group to see what the PCOS Center is up to and our confirmed meetings.

http://pcos.meetup.com/212

In the fall of 2007 we will be hosting a one day conference and a PCOS Walk right in Philadelphia!!!!!

Keep your eyes peeled for more news!!!!!

All the Best,

Ashley

Lori,

The closest one to Reading I am aware of that is an excellent doc is Dr. Legro at the Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA The only problem is he does a lot of research and lectures for PCOS so it is difficult to get an appointment. Here is his info. BUt also if you type his name in Google you cna see everyhitng he does with PCOS. He is highly regarded!!!

Rick Legro, M.D.
Hershey Medical Center
850 University Drive
Hershey, Pennsylvania 17033
Phone: (717) 531-8478

Best of Luck,
Ashley

Hey Lori...

I'm in Lancaster county here. I've heard good things about Dr Legro as well. But I would highly recommend Dr Sherif, If you don't mind the drive. I drive to Philly to see her, and wouldn't hesitate to tell you to do the same! I hadn't had any luck with docs around here.

Good luck!

I have an apt with Dr.Legro on the 27th. I'm not sure if I should keep it or not. I want to find a doctor that will listen to my concerns and not just shove prescriptions at me. I was diagnosed a few years back, but have been unable to treat it since I didn't have any insurance. In the past when I said I wasn't ready to conceive the just gave me birth control pills to regulate me, but when I stopped taking them things went crazy again. My husband and I are not ready to have a baby right now (hopefully in about 2 years). I haven't had a cycle in almost 3 years. Lets face it not having to worry about that monthly visitor is nice until you want to have a baby. I want a doctor that is willing to try and correct what is wrong with out the use of birth control, and possibly even willing to try natural remedies as well. If anyone has any thoughts or sugestions I would love to hear them! I have an apt with Dr.Legro on the 27th. I'm not sure if I should keep it or not. Hi!

I fully agree with Linni as I go to Dr Sherif too, yet having said that a recommendation from Ashley Tabeling is highly informed.

I would urge to you see either doctor if you are serious about addressing your PCOS condition.

Good luck!

He is very good with explaining and spends time with his patients, doesnt rush you out of the door, tries to get to know you. He is a Specialist in Metabolic Medicine and Clinical Prof at UPenn Med School.
We worked on a food plan, basically what to avoid and food substitutes. He is very familiar with Metformin and PCOS knowledgable.
My second appoitment will be in about week and a half when my blood work results come back.

If you are looking for an Endo in the Philly area, I would highly recomend him!

Thanks for this recommendation!

BTW, is Fireman Sam in the USA now too? My elder son will turn twenty this month and he used to be his favourite when he was little back in UK! (Both my sons even demonstrated some fun regression by searching for Fireman Sam on You Tube!)

Well I saw Dr.Legro yesterday. He have me an official diagnosis of PCOS, but i had to ask if that's was what he thought it was. First off I got lost in the hospital trying to get to his office. Hershey medical center is a HUGE place. For anyone that wants to see him go into the main entrance where it says cancer center. Then at the elevators just past the lion go to the third floor and his office is just down the hall on the third floor. First impression to me the front office staff seemed a little impersonal. I wasn't sure exactly what to expect after that point. The wait wasn't too long as far as most busy specialty offices go. The nurse that took me back seemed in a huge rush and talked so fast I could barely understand her! The wait in the room wasn't too long. They went over the typical stuff: plus, bp, why are you here, history. They did an exam and a sonogram. From there I went into another room to discuss his findings. Dr.Legro answered all the questions I had. He explained that BCP in my case would be used to suppress excess testosterone. I told him that I wanted to do things as naturally as possible. To me that just seems over all healthier. I didn't fully agree with some of the answers to things that he gave me. The biggest being natural supplements. I had read on here under the natural remedies post that a deficiency of magnesium can cause insulin problems as well as other problems. And as most everyone seems to know PCOS stems from an insulin problem. When I asked him about this he said that we are a pill poping society and that he could give a pt a pill that looks like a magnesium supplement with nothing in it and they will still feel better. I wish at the time i didn't have such a bad head ache or I would have responded with, "then why do they give prenatal vitamins to expecting women if nutritional supplements don't make a difference?" Obviously we need certain vitamins and minerals since those are some of the things that make our bodies work, so isn't it safe to say if we are lacking in some or one of those that things might not be working properly? Over all he was really nice and took the time to answer all my questions even if i don't agree with all of his answers. I'm still not 100% sure if he is the doctor I'm going to stick with since there was a little uneasiness, but I'm willing to give him a fair chance. Also anyone that is considering going to see him needs to realism that Hershey medical is a teaching hospital and Dr.Legro is also a professor. In the room I had Dr.Legro,Dr.McCollester (female Dr.) and a medical student/intern that was observing. So if you don't feel comfortable with a student in the room while you have your exam you may want to let them know when you make the appointment and possibly on the day of your appointment as well. Oh and by the way he put me on 500mg of metformin a day, over the course of the next month I am supposed to add a pill each week until I get to 1000mg in the morning and 1000mg in the evening. And Prometrium 200mg for 12days each month. He also ordered blood work: Lipid panel, Liver profile, Metabolic panel, progesterone lvls, and an insuloin resistance test. I'm having the blood work done on monday and I'll start taking the meds after that. I don't want the medication to influence the insulin test which is why I'm waiting until then to start the medication.

BiPolarBear: I see Dr. Kubik at Reproductive Health Specialists in Penn Hills. It may be a bit of a drive for you, but I really like them. If you're interested in an RE, that is.

I think i am going to start looking for another doctor. I had blood work the monday after my last post (Aug. 31) and didn't get my results until yesterday (Sept. 21)! Since I didn't hear anything I called yesterday and left a message assuming everything was find since I hadn't heard anything. Usually with blood work no news is good new. Boy was I wrong! 3 of my tests came back high, and no one called to tell me. I probably still wouldn't know if I hadn't called yesterday! Now they want me to do a follow up visit and I can't get in until November. Partly b/c I will be out of town for two weeks, but my options were either Oct 13 or wait until November.

thanks for sharing your experience. Since moving to pa I've had a hard time finding a good endo. 3 wks does seem a bit long for those results.

I'm seeing Dr. Legro next week. My husband and I are TTC; however, I'm worried that he's too busy to properly care for me and my infertility issues. Does he have a nursing staff that handles this? Is it easy to get an appt. if you are already one of his patients? (I had to wait two months for this one!). Any thoughts?
