It's so funny, I have been hoping he would prescribe it and finally after getting all the lab work back he did and now I'm too scared to take it. Part of it is because he prescribed 2000mg a day (1000 in am 1000 in pm) and didn't tell me to work up to it. I have to go back May 6th for bloodwork and to see how it's working so I don't know what to do. Can you break the 1000mg pills and take them? Should I do that and just take 1/2 at night for a week then 1/2 am 1/2 pm the next and work up that way without asking the Dr? I don't want to be sick especially while my kids are out for Spring Break next week. I don't know what to do.
Thanks for your help.

You can always place a call to your doctor, and see what he recommends. Or maybe take one whole pill and see what that does to you. If it messes you up, then try half. My Met only gives me tummy troubles occasionally. That is what I personally would do. I am only at 1500 though. So mine are 500 each, 3 times a day.
Good luck.

If you really are that uncomfortable about starting that much give your dr a call and voice your opinions he might have a solution that works for both of you.

Thanks for your help. I know I should ask the Dr, I just have a problem talking to people especially Drs and asking questions. That's why it took me over a year to make an appointment with the Endo after my Gyn refused to put me on Met (he said to just do the BCP and I don't need to be on BCPs, but I didn't argue.) I know it's my health, but I'm too shy and I can't speak up. On a computer I'm fine because I can get my words straight before hitting send, but in person or on the phone I just get so tongue tied and I just can't talk so I don't.
Anyway sorry for my life story. Thanks again for your help. I think I will try the one pill at night to see how it affects me first. I do think I may wait until Sunday night though so that I can have a good Easter first without worring.
Thank you again for your replies!

This is me too! It takes me forever to schedule appointments or ask questions to my doctors. I've been to quite a few doctors in the past who look at me like I'm stupid or something for asking a question. And they wonder why patient's don't ask questions! Geesh! Thankfully, I have a new doctor who is actually interested in helping me get an offically diagnoses that I do infact have PCOS.
I say, try the Met as your doctor instructed you to do for a day or two...see how it goes...if you still feel a little unsure, call the office and speak with either the doctor or one of his assistants.

I started at 500mg and took it at night. After a week, I added 250mg. I did that for a couple days and was fine, so for the last couple days I've been at 1000mg (500mg twice a day) and have been fine. Try just taking one after dinner and see what happens. If you take it for several days and are still ill, call your doc and let them know what you're doing and what's going on.
Good luck! I was really scared too, but it really hasn't been that bad!

My Dr. prescribed 1000mg to start and see what the results were... I was uncomfortable with jumping straight to 1000mg so I started 500mg every night for a few days. Then I increased to 500mg in the am and 500mg in the pm. It worked very well for me. GL, L

i hope it's going well for you. i personally am able to curb all side effects by taking the pill in the middle of a high fiber/low fat breakfast and not eating anything sugary or fatty anytime near the time of taking the medicine.
When I first started I took 250mg (1/2 pill) for 1 week, 500 (1 pill) the next week, 750 (1 1.2 pills) the next and then finally 1000mg (2 pills) the last week. My recommendation is go slow!
Just to give you Met newbies some hope: After 3 months all my side effects went away (until the dr upped my dosage again). But 3 months after that my s/e are almost all gone. If I eat something really bad they will come back, but for the most part I feel just normal.
GL!!!

I started at 500mg for 2 weeks, and then I took 1000mg a day after that. I think started low and working your way up is the best bet. If you are uncomfy with starting at 1000mg, then by all means take 500mg for as long as you like!

Thanks for all your responses! Well I took 1000mg at night for 2 nights and didn't feel too bad so I went ahead and took 1000 twice a day the next day. WHOA! The side effects kicked in then. I couldn't stay awake, I had diarrhea, nausea, and constant headache. It was good and bad that it was Spring Break for my kids so that I didn't have to leave my house. I am slowly getting better. I can now stay awake most of the day, but I still go to bed much earlier than I used to (10pm instead of midnight or later). I don't have diarrhea everyday, but still upset stomach some. I can see the Met already doing something with my body though. Even though I am on BCP (Seasonique) and shouldn't have a period for another 3 weeks I have started heavy spotting so I guess it is working on my hormones already. Good thing is I have lost 4 or 5 lbs within the first week.
