There was a segment on today's (9/17/09) episode of "The Dr.'s" featuring a woman with hirsutism (who did not know what was going on with her health and hormones).
As a "parting gift" she received a Tria home laser hair removal device - (I was not aware of these - I tried to look it up - I'm under the impression that they are expensive and not approved (at least at this time) for use of the face and neck).
I wish this wasnt moved from the media section, I also watched it and found the segment very interesting. Her testosterone was fine...her FSH to LSH ratio was fine...I still dont understand how she has pcos...I dont like the Drs idea of PCOS either. The 3 things that they use to diagnose pcos...obesity...irregular periods and facial hair. Well I only have one of those things yet I have high testosterone...I think they actually did a horrible job explaining pcos and proper treatment. ugh media!

I thought the same thing. I don't really like that show that much because they gloss over everything. I know they only have an hour and can't really go into depth since they have to talk about many topics, but the information they give is very misleading. I was also upset by their definition though I have 2 of the symptoms that they typically look for. Also, I was surprised that they didn't mention metformin at all. They basically told her lose weight and it'll get better. Well, as anyone with PCOS knows, it is incredibly difficult to lose weight, especially without met.

I forgot to add that I was also upset that they didn't really delve into the complications that PCOS causes. They didn't talk about infertility, heart disease, etc.

But they did give her a home laser treatment...lol! So you have no numbers that point to pcos? But you are overweight with facial hair? Then you must have PCOS! Its no biggie, just lose some weight and take this home laser treatment and you ll be fixed right up!
