My endo. is upping my dosage of synthroid even though my levels are ok. She did this before a few months ago. She says it will help me to lose weight. She also said that my dosage will go down when my weight goes down. She also upped my met. to help me lose weight. I have been losing. The plan is to conceive in 2007.
I just don't like the idea of taking more medicine than I need to. Anyone else hear of this or do this?

I'm surprised your doctor would do this... it's been my experience that when the TSH levels are even a little too low, doctors decrease synthroid. I can't imagine it's a good idea to intentionally go a little bit hyperthyroid for weight loss.
I'm curious to hear what others think!

Thanks for responding. I was starting to be ok with the idea of upping the dose (I haven't started yet, I'm waiting to run out of what's left), and now I'm scared again. I think I'm going to get a second opinion from my OB/GYN. He's pretty knowledgable about this stuff. I was thinking I would try it and watch for the signs that it is too much. Headaches... nervousness... unable to sleep.... (Gee, kinda sounds like a mommy of a 10 month old to me... j/k)

Be cautious of taking a higher dose of Synthroid. As you said, you will start to see hyperthyroid symptoms (unable to sleep, nervousness, racing heart). Being hyper for an extended time can cause harm to your body...I would find another endo to get a second opinion from, one that deals mostly with thyroid issues. Good luck in your journey!

I've been hypo. I've been hyper. I've been undermedicated and I've been overmedicated. And I can say that it's worth a trial to see if you need it.
Most docs undermedicate you. How do you KNOW your bloodwork is showing the level that is optimal for YOU? It could be "in range" but not optimal for YOU.
I think you should trust your doc, she may have played the weight loss card but she probably has other reasoning besides what she's mentioning to you.

Thanks for your reply too. I'm still going back and forth on it. I have time to decide though. I have a bunch of pills left from the last prescription. She said something to the effect of that as long as I stay range she's going to bump it up. When I questioned it, she said "I'm the physician, trust me..." hee hee.
