Unhappy Dr won't give me provera to bring on AF! Says it can cause breast cancer???

I haven't had my period in 1.5years and I am desperate to have a regular cycle so I can have a baby. My specialist told me that there's been alot of recent studies to say that progesterone supplements have been causing breast cancer and he'd prefer me not to take it. He did a blood test and said my estrogen levels were normal so that means there's not a thickening of the uterus lining so no increased risk of cancer. So he said to just keep taking Metformin & losing weight and that should bring on my period. I've already lost 15kg and still no period. Did anyone else Dr say they didn't want to prescribe Provera because it's linked to breast cancer? Or has anyone else been told it's ok to not have a period that long??? So confused because it seems to go against the things I've read on the internet and on this site.

I agree with tinkerbelle.....Today they tell you everything causes cancer.

I have been put on provera 4 times since 1998 and I have never had a problem so I don't know what to say except GOOD LUCK TO YOU in whatever you decide to do.

(((HUGS)))

Oh I forgot to say, your dr says provera can cause breast cancer, I was told that not having a period can lead to utering cancer. I too have not had a period in almost a year and a half (15months to be exact) and now my uterine lining is very thick. I was just put on provera to have a period and It worked for me. So there are pro's and con's to everything we have to do in life.

I just heard another one that causes cancer. I started to eat right and exercise everyday and I dring bottled water, now they are saying that the bottled water can cause cancer due to the water being warm and something to do with the inside of the bottle.. Isn't it warm when you buy it off the shelf?????

Good luck again

(((HUGS)))

Julie

P.S. I don't want you to think I am being sarcastic, It's not ment to sound that way, I am just so sick and tired of all the new things the Dr's come up with.

If he won't give you provera, maybe you can ask for prometrium? It's better than provera because I think it's a more natural version of progesterone.

Kristina brings up a great point, Prometrium is a great one for women who react badly to provera or birthcontrol pills. If your not allergic to peanuts ask him for a perscription of prometrium.

It's about as close as you'll get to the progesterone your body already makes. I've had no horibble side effects like i've had on provera or bcps. Also not having a period is extreamy dangerous for uterine cancer. I ended up having an endometerial lining biopsy done because i hadn't had a period in over a year, as well as my ultrasound showed a lining of 7mm, which for a women who is quote " menapausal " thats not a good thing. Under 5 mm your good.

So if you have to find a new dr. Dont let this one put you at risk for other cancers.

And not everyone gets a cycle back on met and lose the weight fast enough to do that. I lost over 10 % of my body weight and never got my cycle back and i was on met for 15 months.

You could try natural progesterone cream. Since it is a plant source, your body uses it like food - what it doesn't need, it can throw off (unlike artificial hormones).

Here's one you could think about:
