Drilling v. met... What treatments are 'in' in Australia?
Is ovarian drilling particularly popular with drs in Australia?
I'm ttc and I've just been for my 1st app with a obgyn... she's recommended ovarian drilling as a 1st line treatment, even before trying medication.... this really surprised me as I thought it was a last resort. I've done a fair amount of research on meds and hoped to be prescribed met, even though I'm not overweight... I've read that it seems to work wonders for o'ing even if if you're not IR and reduces the risk of m/c. But the dr told me that IR is not an issue unless I have a family history of diabetes... basically met is out of the question. The literature I was given at the clinic states that met is not approved for pcos treatment in Australia and avandia not approved for anything in australia... would anyone be able to enlighten me about pcos treatment in Australia and what's 'in' and 'out' over here? Thanks!
Sarah
Hi!
I'm in Melbourne and my doctor said that drilling should only be used as a last resort. His first line of action is diet and exercise (even though I'm also one of the thin cysters), then Metformin, then Met combined with ovulation induction and then drilling, if all else fails.
I'n not TTC as yet but am on Met to help with some symptoms, so it definitely is used in Austalia.
Good luck.
Hi mariya - thanks for giving me a different perspective! Maybe I should get a 2nd opinion... what diet does your dr recommend? low-carb or something else?
Sarah
Hi!
The diet that was recommended to me is the low glycaemic index diet. A good basis for understanding the diet is contained in the book'The New Glucose Revolution'. The book also contains tables listing the GI values of common foods and everything with a GI of 55 or under is considered to be a food with a low GI. The book also contains lots of other info, recipes and so on. I believe in balanced diets so am not a big advocate of the low carb diets.
Good luck and let me know how you go. Also I think that you should definitely get a second opinion if you are not happy with the advice of your current doctor.
Thanks for the advice, Mariya! It seems like there are lots of Aussie cysters out there who are on met... Now I have to find a dr somewhere here who may be able to give me a different perspective.... Glad everything's working out for you!
