Default Drinking while on Metformin

I'm not usually a drinker, but I will be going out this weekend for some drinks. Is it ok to do that while on Metformin? Should I skip a dose or what?

TIA

I occasionally drank on my metformin. Sometimes I felt worse the next day, but sometimes did not. I really did not go out and get smashed either, so I think you should be fine.

I went out last weekend and skipped a day's worth because I didn't want to take the risk...

From what I've been reading I think it depends a lot on your individual tolerance... some people seem to do fine, some don't...

I read somewhere that the met interacts with the liver in such a way that your liver can not process the alcohol so it goes straight to your head. I can testify to that to be true. At our company Christmas Party last year I was the first on drunk off 2 drinks and it usually take a good bit more than that. So I would advise you to skip a day or to before drinking. HTH.

My dr told me that the warnings about alcohol are for people who take Met for diabetes, not for IR and it would be hard to casually drink enough to cause problems if you aren't diabetic. I routinely drink a glass or two of wine with dinner while taking Met. That being said, the potential problems if you DO drink too much are pretty bad so if I'm having more than a couple of glasses I generally skip a dose. She also told me to be extra careful about dehydration while taking Met and exercising, and since alcohol dehydrates you, I'd advise drinking extra non-alcoholic stuff too... alternate or something... even if it does make you have to pee all the freaking time

I am a VERY nervous flyer so I have to have some drinks when I do. I just skipped a dose while I was drinking and I was fine. I was a big drinker before I started taking Met and now I am a very casual drinker...it was hard but reading all the effects to your liver scared me. The good thing is that it helps you to lose weight by not drinking

Seriously - you can drink on Met? It doesn't totally mess you up?

Ha! I'm a wine girl myself (and beer too, for that matter) and that's what I thought. I was told one drink was OK - but i have never ever in my entire life been able to have just one drink. I'm better off not having any at all.

As a single cyster who lives in NYC and works in the entertainment industry, it's putting a serious dent in my social life for the moment, but I know I have to integrate me not drinking into my lifestyle.... baby steps to conquering this thing!!!

At least I didn't have to give up coffee (in addition to alcohol). I still need to have some of my crutches!!! I need my crutches!!!! LOL

I always felt icky if I drank one glass of wine on Metformin. However, if I had a glass of water after the wine, I was usually ok.

I have now tested the drinking on Met theory a couple of times and I was fine. When i flew to NY I had a zanex and one glass of wine and I was the happiest I have ever been. I slept like a baby and was fine the next day. I think everyone is different and you just need to test it yourself. Drink lots of water and eat first.

Cheers!!!!!

I've drank on Met as well. You may have the poops and you may find that you get a bit tipsy quicker than usual so be careful.

You'll be fine though. Call and talk to a Pharmacist to be sure but it's usually fine.

I drink on Met, and I'm fine! I haven't noticed any difference - I don't feel more drunk at all. I mean, I have to say i'm not going out on a bender or anything - more like sharing a bottle of wine with my hubbie! I'm sure everyone's different, but it's certainly fine for me.
