My Mom has always done this and her hair is real soft and nice. She has short hair but she uses the hot curling iron on hers also, she takes handful of Baking Soda and puts it in with her shampoo and washes her hair and leaves it on there for awhile and then rinses it out in warm water, it comes out really clean and so soft! I have tried it a few times and it does work everytime I have done it, she does it all the time though... she keeps a box of baking soda in the bathroom with her shampoo. Try it out and see if it helps it is really cheap to try. Hope this helps!!

I am in a swimming pool 5 days a week, plus I color my hair and straigth iron it everyday. To keep it from getting straw-like and brittle, I use biolage leave in creme after I shampoo and condition it in the morning. Then I blow it dry. After that I use biolage Fortifying Heat Styler before I straight iron it. They both work wonders and keep my hair soft and healthy. I also alternate shampoos between and color safe and a moisture shampoo (both biolage) every few days.

Are you using a thermal spray before using your flat-iron? It makes a huge difference! I use Matrix Iron-smoother, it does a great job of protecting my hair from damage. It also gets my super curly hair extra straight and smooth.

For shampoo and conditioner I also use the Biolage line, it really is the best for dry hair!

Another thing that really helps is olive oil. Heat it for less than a minute in the microwave, wet hair, and massage it into your head. I leave it in for 5-10 minutes (with a showercap on to keep in the heat) and shampoo as normal.

Also, I occasionally use cider vinegar to get rid of buildup from shampoos. It makes my hair very soft, but I don't know what it would do in terms of moisturizing.
