Does anyone have dry flaky patches of brown on your skin? I know about acanthosis nigricans but I don't think that is what this is. I have seen pictures and that is not what this looks like. Mine is just brown patches of very dry, flaky skin (the rest of my skin is not dry) and it is between and under my breasts and kind of over my ribcage. That is the only place it is. Does anyone else have this or know what it is? TIA
Mandi

I have this same thing and it is the AN. It can look and feel differently depending on where it is and how bad it is. Mine tends to go away when I am controling diet really well, but while I was pg it was really bad because of the hormones. Mine gets flaky at times - you can scrub it raw and it still is flaky.
If you are still in doubt you should see your DR.

I have AN (especially around my neck) and TV (which goes down my shoulders to the front of my chest but also under my breasts, in my armpits and upper abdomen).
I wish I could find a better picture for you (the ones on medline aren't that great).
AN is dark, occurs in skin folds anywhere on the body and feels velvety. It's a consequence of the IR.
TV is a fungal infection. The fungi are found naturally on your body, especially in your hair, so you'll see it around the shoulders and upper chest and back. The treatment is usually a shampoo, oral antifungals (like diflucan, which I have taken), or both. What I've found works best is both: the antifungals once a week for 2-3 weeks, then the shampoo once a week thereafter.
Unfortunately TV is chronic, meaning it can come back even after your treat it repeatedly. Using the shampoo is important to prevent it from breaking out.
TV is related to Tinea Corpus which causes ring worm so if you say to your doc, "I think I have Tinea Versicolor." they may say, "You don't have ring worm!"
It sucks, it's embarassing, but it's treatable.
I hope you find a diagnosis either way. Good luck!

I agree with Jessica, it could be TV. TV usually starts as a/several small patch/es which "grow" or spread without treatment. It's a PITA because it can keep coming back. Get the doc to take a skin scraping, this will determine for sure if it is VT.

Hey ladies. Dr says it does look like a fungal infection. Wrote me a script for Lamisil. I dropped it off at the pharmacy and then they called a bit later to inform me that it's available over the counter for about $10. Who would have thought. I was afraid I was going to have to pay my $40 co-pay for it so that was good news. Anyway, thanks for all your input. He says if it does not clear up in about 2 weeks to call him and we will treat as thought it is something other than fungal.

Was this a primary care physician or a dermotologist? I've used shampoos, they don't clear it up by itself when it's past a certain point. Then you need an oral antifungal, like Diflucan, and the shampoo can be used for prophylaxis.
If you treat it, and it goes away with the Lamisil, it can easily come back again and again. That's why it's important to use the shampoo.
If you go to a derm, they can do a biopsy (scrape some flakes off and look under a microscope), that would be definative.
I really suggest going to a derm, especially if the Lamisil doesn't work. Treating something with antibiotics without really knowing what it is isn't good.

It was actually my obgyn that I went to. I needed a new script for BCPs so I just had him look at it. If this does not help, I will go see a dermatologist.

It could possibly be eczema if not AN, so I would go to a dermatologist to make sure so that it can be treated accordingly
