Today is Leap Day.
I have carried you around my neck
Though you should have been far deeper inside.
Today I should feel your weight
I should be shifting, hesitating,
Complaining because you are late.
Instead I pull off my necklace
Cold silver with a tiny green stone
To commemorate how you might have slipped out
Into the world, Emmanuella.
I have worn it every day since I lost you
And today is Leap Day, a unique day,
Today I place my necklace in a box
Because it is the only grave I have for you.
Today is the day I should have had a baby
And all I have is the emptiness of me.
My neck feels empty without you.
