Default Duke Medical Center - PCOS study is recruiting women participants

Hi Ladies. Last week I received a letter in the mail from Duke University Medical Center:

This letter is to let you know about a new PCOS study that is being directed by Dr. Susan Schneider. This study is only being offered to women with a diagnosis of PCOS wo have fewer than 8 menstrual periods each year. The study is designed to test the effects of flaxseed supplementation on hormonal levels. We are recruiting women who:

1. Have PCOS, as defined as 8 or fewer periods per year.
2. Are 18-45 years of age and premenopausal.
3. Are currently not pregnant or breastfeeding.
4. Are not planning on pregnancy in the next year.
5. Have not used oral contraceptives, hormonal agents or drugs to control blood sugar within the past 3 months.
6. Have not been diagnosed with hyperprolactinemia, thyroid abnormalities, or nonclassic adrenal hyperplasia.
7. Are not taking oral antibiotics regularly, and have not used them within the past 7 days.
8. Have not started taking any dietary fiber supplements within the past month, and do not plan to start doing so within the next 6 months.
9. Have not consumed flaxseed within the past month.

If you are interested or have questions, please call the study coordinator at 1-800-868-0477.

When I moved to North Carolina in 2000 and was not getting my period regularly, had several fainting spells and some odd, gross chin hairs, my mother took me to Duke to see Dr. Ann Brown, who diagnosed me with PCOS. It did not effect my life very much at that time. I was 18 and very active and ate well. In the last 3 years I have gained a little weighed and slowed down due to law school and work. A year ago I was diganosed as IR, also at Duke, and was put on Metformin.

I wanted to make sure that more people were able to not only see that this study is being done, but also give more women the chance to participate. Unfortunatly I am on Metformin and I take birth control pills, so I can't participate. I'm sure that many of us are in that same position. I also do not know if you need to live in the immediate area or if there is any compensation involved. I was just thrilled to see that SOME work is being done in this area. Duke has been an amazing resource for me and I'm very lucky to live close by. If anyone else does and meets the criteria, I'm sure it would be beneficial to participate.

Do you have to be local to Duke in order to take part in this?

I'm not really sure about that. I'm assuming I recieved the letter because I saw a Dr. there who diagnosed me w. PCOS and have gone to for follow ups. If you meet the criteria, I would call that number and ask. Duke has such an amazing hospital and clinical facilities, I have actually looked at their website to see if there were any studies I could participate in before. It's kind of like free treatment in a way. Sorry I can't be of more help!
