Default DVT anyone?

Hi ladies, I was wondering if any of you have had problems with blood clots in your legs due to PCOS? I was diagnosed 20 years ago and have just recovered from a pulmonary embolism caused by a clot in my leg. I have read that PCOS is a risk factor for this problem. There just seems to be no end to the problems this disease causes.
Thanx for your input!
Amanda

I had a stroke 2 days after i turn 16 my neuro dr said that provera caused it. Lets say no hormones for me ever again. The drs told me it is a very rare side effect leave it to me to have it. Never thought it could be in connection to the pcos.

My obgyn told me there seems to be some connection to blood clotting problems and pcos, and many of the studies i have read mention a possible connection, but to my (limited) knowledge, i have'nt seen anything conclusive. I did have a dvt and pulmonary embolism when i was 23 after being on bcp's for 4 years, so who knows if it was just the one in a million kind of thing to get it that young, or if it had anything to do with pcos. I'd be interested to see if anyone can answer your question, and hope you're feeling better.

I have had a dvt, but i dont think it was related to having pcos, i had a venogram and drs found two blood clots, i recovered well but have damaged values in veins, if you do notice symptoms its best to have it checked out.

interesting...I was dx'd with MTHFR(A1298c) a blood clotting disorder this past year when I found out I was PG..These type of disorders can cause m/c..
and there are quite a few of us on the boards that have these type of DNA mutations/disorders...

My sister and I both have PCOS and she has a blood clot in her leg that is being treated now. She went in the hospital for a couple of days, she's back home and on blood thinners.

Thank you ladies for your replies. I know that for myself, the PCOS would be only a partial cause. I finally got my 13.5 month long period to stop by going on BCP. Now, I know that they likely had a huge impact on the clots, but my gyno says that the PCOS also interferes with clotting enzymes. So, I'm on blood thinners and still on the BCP because I REFUSE to go back to that bleeding and the doctors will NOT do surgery due to my weight. So far, there was a balance between the BCP and the thinners. Today though, a nasty surprise and heavy AF. I am at my wits end with all of this and have agreed to have one withdrawl bleed every 3 months supervised by my gyno. I did not sign up for this today, though and a shock to hear the doctor say that probably the blood thinners causing this. AAARRRRGGGGGGGGG
Sorry, Just had to vent today.
A.

I am paranoid about getting blood clots because I've just started Yaz, and I'm over 35. Can you describe how you knew you had clots? I've read things that say extreme pain and leg swelling. I have these pains that feel like pricks or maybe being poked with a small knife in my leg in several places. My legs aren't swollen, and it's not warm anywhere near wear I feel the strange sensations. I hate to be a hypochondriac, so I haven't called my doctor, but I wonder if these are the beginning of clots.

For me, the pain was almost constant and in one place in the calf muscle. It was incredibly painful unless I was standing and the pain radiated almost to my hip. Dr Suggested I go to ER for a Doppler test on my leg and a D-Dimer test(blood) they found no clot on the Doppler and the D-Dimer was neg, but the internist still believes that it was the clot that caused all my problems. No redness, swelling or heat. If you're concerned, I'd contact your Dr. Trust me, it can save your life if you do have a clot, better to treat it when it's still in your leg than after it moves.
Good luck
Amanda

I had a PE (pulmonary embolism) right after my first son was born. I had excruciating pain in my back and was panting (didn't even realize it until DH pointed it out). I had previously been on BCP (about 18 months before this happened), had pre-clampsia and was on bedrest. So, being overweight, pregnant, and on bedrest was the problem. I later got a Dx of PCOS..which is also a factor. So..no BCP for me. My docs have given me Provera even though I guess I shouldn't go on that either.

That's why I stopped Yaz, I felt "pinging" in my legs and both sides of my family have histories of blood clots. Not worth the chance of increasing those chances to me. I later started Met with no side effects that I know of and would eventually like to find out what I can do naturally to make everything go back into balance. I'm trying to research and find an Endocrinologist in my area who specializes (if possible) in PCOS.

Best wishes to you on your journey.
