Default DX and now on Glucophage

Hello!
It's been quite a while since I posted here. I was finally diagnosed as IR and border-line diabetic by my endo. (no specific PCOS testing done, but my 16 yo dd has been DX with pocos and IR too).

FYI (for those who like to see numbers):

fasting insulin was 26 (lab range should be below 17) and my 1 hour was 211 (lab range should be below 88). No doubt about the IR!

fasting glucose was 102 (lab range should be below 110) and my 1 hour was 192 (lab range should be below 200 - so I missed being DX type II by only 8 points)

Anyway, my endo put me on Glucophage. So far so good I guess. Was there supposed to be side-effects with this med? I haven't really noticed anything. I really didn't start taking my meds right away, as I had some surgery, and it said on the bottle not to take it if you're having surgery (not sure why?). So this is my first full week on it, and according to my scale this morning, I'm down 2 lbs - with no other dietary changes. Anyone else lose weight on Glucophage?

Thanks!

Hi! It sounds like you are doing great on the glucophage. I know that the first 3 months I was on it I lost 34lbs.

I had some stomach upset and gas the first week and a half I was on it and then my body adjusted and I was fine. I guess the GI side effects are different on everyone.

I think you aren't supposed to take it before, during, or directly after surgery because it interacts with certain dyes used in different x-ray procedures, or when they take pictures of your intestines etc... I am not sure of the names. I just know that in my diabetes class it said to control blood sugar through a different medicine if you are planning certain procedures.

I hope that the glucophage and just watching your carb intake helps you to avoid type II diabetes for as long as you can. I am glad you have a very proactive doctor who is taking steps now with the IR; instead of waiting until you are type II. Good luck and best wishes,
Diana

Default Glucophage

Hi, I just started on Glucophage too. 1,500 mg per day.
I am not diabetic. I am just the opposite. My blood sugar falls to a recordable 22 2 hours after drinking the glucose. The did the test twice and the second time the next week was not as bad but still not good at all.
I have the ovary problem and it is the only female organ left n the pelvic area and that is coming out next month.
I am thinking to stay on the Glucophage because I feel so much better.
What I thought was hysterectomy hormone brain fog has turned out to be the effects of my Pancreas overproducing Insulin.
Pro active Doctors are a great blessing.

Unhappy Glucophage & Stomach Problems

I've been on Glucophage for about 6 months now and it has been hell on my stomach!! If I try to eat tomatos, pickles, oranges... basically anything acidic I have heartburn out the wazoo.

Does anyone else get this??

I tried not taking it for a few days to see if it was the meds doing this to me, and when I was off of it, I didn't have a problem. The minute I went back on, on came the heart burn. :\

Any advice besides rolaids?

Tori
