OK, so for the last year and a half, on and off I have had my hair professionally highlighted. It's not some crazy bleach and always a fairly subtle type colour, but I do not have THE best hair ever. It is quite thin and I wonder is hair dyeing a bad idea for us PCOSers!? I have started taking flaxseed oil tabs along with a woman's multivitamin a few days ago so I'm hoping they will help my general health etc. I do get my hair cut quite often, but now that I'm trying to grow it and things are going nowhere really I wonder if I could be on the way to losing my hair?... I would really appreciate some info, thanks a lot!!
I dont think the hair coloring is going to make you permanantly lose your hair. It can make whats already there fall out or "melt", but that hair should grow back. The thing I have found helpful, to make my hair and nails grow fast is actually pre-natal vits. When I take them, my hair grows like crazy.

Dyeing your hair whether you have PCOS or not will not cause your hair to stop growing. I suppose if you overdye your hair it can break off, but I have never heard of permanent hair loss from it. I've been reading a lot about hair loss lately, & I have never heard of hair dye being a cause, so relax about that.

Disco is right. If you get a very bad dye job that is going to damage your hair, it's going to damage it whether you have PCOS or not. And likewise, if you get yours done, or do it yourself responsibly with a good product, it isn't going to affect the rate at which you lose hair.

I cant agree with that! The damage done depends entirely upon the type of "dying" you are doing. Bleaching is actually stripping the hair as opposed to laying on another layer, so will cause much more damage than adding a colour.
I last had my hair cut 5 years ago, to shoulder length, I have been dying it the same shade of red for 6 years. Since that time my hair has grown to 22" in length and reaches the small of my back, I'd say that was proof enough that dying doesnt stop your hair growing! I feel that when you use any dye on your hair you need to give it much more respect in other areas to compensate for any possible damage you are doing to it.
I have always, washed my hair everyday using lots of conditioner to remove all snags and knots before i rinse it off and finish washing it, I do not brush or comb it and I do not blowdry it. I have incredibly thin hair (compared to how I know it should be and used to be before puberty) and lose literally clumps all the time but I treat it nice enough to give it chance to grow back
Perhaps you could look into being quite so obsessively kind to your hair as I am (except when i dye it lol) and you wont have anything to worry about then
Dying, or even bleaching, will not stop your hair from growing, as all these other ladies have pointed out. It can appear to make it stop growing if you aren't giving it the care it needs as it will break off at a faster rate, requiring more to be trimmed off at each trim. If things are really bad, your hair could appear to shrink!
I highly suggest that if you are interested in haircare, or especially if you want to grow out your hair longer, do an internet search on "long hair" and "boards". I used to know of tons of long hair boards, but sadly all of those links are on an old computer of mine at my other residence. The ladies on these boards are amazing and have haircare down to an art. With their help (and the help of some hormonal issues I was having at the time) I grew my hair from shoulder length to butt length in a few years. And I'm a girl who could never grow hair past my bra-strap! Ever! My hair is now to the tops of my thighs and still growing. And I dye it every 30 days without fail. The individual strands are very fine, as I'm a natural strawberry blonde, so I must treat it with great care.
Some quick advice:
-Never blowdry. Ever. Maybe a tiny bit to style bangs, etc., but that's it.
-Never use shampoos containing sodium lauryl sulfate. sodium laureth sulfate is ok though.
-Deep condition your hair AT LEAST once a week. Slather warm olive oil, or cream deep conditioner (can often be found in the "ethnic hair" section) on the length of your damp, still dirty, hair. Wrap a warm towel around your head and let it sit as long as you can stand (preferrably about an hour). Wash/condition your hair as normal.
-I bet Ireland has hard water, with all that limestone. You could probably use a vinegar rinse. I use about a tablespoon of vinegar (apple or white) to about a liter of water to rinse my hair between my last shampoo before I condition it. This helps keep the mineral buildup down which keeps it soft and shiny. You will not smell of vinegar, I promise. Our water is hard and without a vinegar rinse my hair feels crispy and dry, even though it isn't. It's mineral buildup.
-Use a good leave in conditioner every day
-Use a good protein "reconstructor" conditioner on your hair each time it's dyed and about once a month thereafter (if you don't dye monthly). Ask your stylist for recommendations on this.
-wear your hair "up" as much as possible. A bun is best. French braids can be protective, too. Yeah I know, but that's ironically the secret of getting long hair You may only be able to show it once a week or so, but when you show it... oh boy!
Check out those hair boards! They even have vitamin recomendations to help your hair grow faster and they have just tons of good haircare advice.

Charlie! I just wanted to say that your haircolor is amazing! Surely you have to have that done professionally? We have about the same red, but that black really adds something. I've always, always wanted to do black but my one experiment with it in highschool was a hairdye tragedy It just didn't suit my complexion, but you and I have the same coloring (only you are less ruddy, lucky duck!) and it works for you so I'm all confused now. Maybe I'll try a few black pieces, but I'm afraid of the interaction of the dyes/colors... maybe a semi-perm? I'm hopeless at color!
Oh, and any time you permanently dye your hair you bleach it... even if it's a darker color. Odd, but true. That's what hairdye "developer" is: bleach. From what I was told (mind you! But this was by my hairdresser), the hair is bleached to "lift" the cuticles of the hair so that the molecules of colorant can be deposited beneath them. This is why reds wash out so quickly, as it's the largest dye molecule and is the most easily disloged. This is also why experimenting with permenant colors is risky and people can end up with orange and green hair!
The only hair color that doesn't involve bleach are what are usually called "deposit only" (Manic Panic, Punky Colours, Fudge, Jazzings, etc.), "rinses" (the original Natural Instincts, Sebastian's Cellophanes) and Henna. I'm sure you've used at least one of these products before and you know how fast they wash out. That's why; they coat and "stain" only because there's no bleach involved.
NOT trying to argue with you at all, just didn't want you thinking that permenant hairdye didn't involve bleaching and all the horrors that entails. It does. Just at lower strengths than most of what of us think of as "bleaches", thank goodness! I still remember my Asian friend's black as night fringe "melting" in my hands as I put Drabber bleach in it back in highschool!
"What's that smell?!?!"
"Oh nothing... just a little meltage!"
It's a wonder we have hair at all!

lol! shows what I know eh Dana, I'm an amateur and I'll admit I've never done any kind of research into how best to care for my hair and such, so it's no wonder I have misconceptions, thank you for straightening them out! I was under the impression that "colouring up" rather than bleaching was more like adding a layer on your hair, tsk! and to think I call myself a scientist hahaha.
As for my hair, I've never had it cut or dyed professionally, my hair is like my own personal treasure so no one ever get's trusted with it lol!
I actually only added the black last month as a new adventure and it worked out much much better than I had been worried it would I have the front and about a third of the lengths black (using permanent dye) I dyed the black in first, by tying my hair into four short plaits leaving the whole of where I wanted to dye free and combing the section at the front out and *laughs* I wore a ring of plastic bag over my forehead and over one eye like a pirate, so I wouldnt get black all over it lol!!! I then conditioned as normal after hair dying before doing the red on the rest of my hair a while later, I avoided mixing them or putting the red over the black. I didnt have any problems at all with it
