Exclamation early signs of pcos in children

Hello I have had pcos since the age of 15, I am now 32 and had a total hystertomy last Aug. I was wondering if any one else has children ages 6-?. I have 8 year old little girl who has already starting have monthly cramps, headaches, mood changes, Ect... Doctors have told me that it is prepuberty. I also have a 6 year little girl who is already haveing a wieght problem but she is soo hyperactive. I am going to have to take her to the doctor for some testing cause the hyperactiveness is effecting her in school. My question is how do you convince a doctor to check for signs of PCOS in children? Could the same harmones imbalance be causeing her to be hyper amd over weight at age 6?

I also suffer from Fibromyagia that has got much worse since my hyster. I was also wondering if anyone has trouble with fibro. I am trying to gather info so my daughters do not have to suffer through life like i did and hopefully can treat this at an early age.

Feel free to IM me on yahoo messenger.... rhilligo

Check the RESEARCH ARTICLES forum. There are several articles on young girls and pcos.
Good for you, mom, for being on the look out!

I had PCOS as a child. It was diagnosed at age seven when I had my appendix out. I wasn't told about it, though, and had no symptoms, that I am aware of until teens and twenties. And I got no treatment either, not that there really were any in those days. So, you CAN definitely have the beginnings of this syndrome as a child. I was diagnosed through surgery and a biopsy, though, and I'm sure you don't want to have to do that with your daughters!

Now, I did have a tendancy to be a very slightly overweight child, but I didn't start gaining more seriously till I was a teen. I remember in sixth grade, when I did start puberty, that my weight was 130, which is a bit high, or I think it was considered so. I had gained to 170 by the end of high school, but gained most of my weight in my 20s.

I started my period right after I turned 12. I remember that my periods were highly irregular throughout my teen years, but I didn't mind and never raised the issue with my parents. I didn't know that this wasn't a healthy state to be in. I didn't have any excess hair issues until I was much older, and never had any problem with acne, even normal teen acne. I always had very clear skin.

About your 8 year old, yes, so many more girls are starting puberty earlier and earlier in this country, partly because of better nutrition than we have every had in our nation's (USA in my case) history, but also partly because our abundance has made our diet poorer in some ways. There is a lot of research that suggests that the hormones and chemicals in our foods today influence girls to start puberty earlier. I'm so sorry about your daughter, and in large part because it is so tough emotionally for these little girls. They just are not emotionally or mentally mature enough to cope with become women physically when they are still really little girls! I hope you get lots of support for her!!!!

Whether this early puberty, and your younger daughter's weight are a sign that PCOS is developing, I don't know. I bet some of our research articles here will help you with that. But I DO KNOW, personally, that you can have the beginnings of this syndrome as a little child, and I personally believe I was probably born with this syndrome.

I am SSSOOOOO happy you have taken the bull by the horns and are exploring this for your girls! If only my parents had! I don't know exactly how you will find out from your children's doctors, but I know you can get them started on a lifetime of healthy eating habits and exercise, which will help them so much long term!!!! Good for you!

I notice you mentioned your hysterectomy. How are YOU doing with the PCOS? How have you chosen to treat it at this point in your life?

thank you for your comments and support about my daughters. Yes, about my hystertomy and pcos. Well the good news is that no longer have constant pain in that area anymore. The bad news it that i am always tired and i have got dignosed with fibromylagia so i am not sure which is making me feel so bad. I am on harmones and was tested a few months ago on my levels. I am happy to say for the first time in my life they came back normal. "That was good news for me, the bad part was i could not get my doctor to realize that yes i do have pcos and that my gyn had me on harmones to level me back to normal. I just agreed with them and went on about my day...lol. I do not regret have my hystertomy at all, I just wish they could now get better control of my fibro so i could start to enjoy life again. Many of the symptoms are the same and i have really bad headaches from both. I think they are linked together, and my RA doctor told me to do research on the internet to learn about my fibro. He was very helpful....lol

Hi hun- I feel ya! My DD just turned 5, and at her yearly exam last week I told the Dr. that I want her tested for IR. He was clueless- her regular doc. is awesome, and this guy was a fill-in . He did write out a referral for a pediatric endo to get some testing done, though!

The only symptom I'm worried about at this time is that she's kind of fuzzy. She is light skinned with dark blonde/very light brown hair, but at 5 she has hair on her toes, fingers, back, and it's getting somewhat darker on her legs...She's so young still, but I want to know the very day anything can be detected if it's there. I will not pretend it's nothing and allow her to suffer with feelings of inadequacy during her formative years. No way in hell will my baby girl ever feel unfeminine! I've been there and done that, but she won't!! My mother was in constant denial and to this day denies knowing anything had been wrong, yet she knew I needed electrolysis at 16!!! She never got me checked, nor did she ever ask a doctor a single question or do anything to help me improve my self-image.

OMG, I'm sooo sorry for that mini rant!
I guess my point is to do whatever you need to do to help your girls if need be.
At 8 early puberty is definitely possible, but ask her Dr. to do some blood work- just to find out all you can. I don't know about your little one, but explain your situation to them, and see what they think.
Good luck, and please keep us posted!
~hugs~

We are watching DD's diet and will have her tested for Insulin Resistance when she is a bit older (she is 21 months now).
