I am so ashamed of my behaviour and dont know what to do, ive never told anyone because i just think its so disgusting and so wrong.....Its also not one of the 2 most common ones too....its called binge eating disorder....basically bumlimic but i dont purge the food......its so wrong and i need help....i didnt know where else to go to ask.....if anyone.....knows anything i would really apreciate it i feel ready to face this now

First congrats on feeling ready to face it! I too have struggled with compulsive overeating/binge eating for many years.
I'd take a look at http://www.something-fishy.org/ for starters. It's probably the best website on overcoming an ED. I'd also check out the books by Geneen Roth and also read Overcoming Overeating. Have you considered going to therapy? There are affordable options if you can't pay full fee. Personally, my therapist has been really important in helping me have a healthy relationship with food.
Personally, I also wouldn't focus on weight loss. I found that when I focused on it, I would go through cycles of feeling really good then feeling really down on myself and restricted, which would lead me to binge. Putting away the scale and stopping dieting were keys to me not bingeing anymore. I know it's hard and tracking weight can be comforting, but most women I know who have recovered from an ED found that loving themself they way they are, fat and all, was necessary. I know it has been for me.
As to the link to PCOS . . . I don't think an ED can cause it, but I'm pretty certain it can make it worse since symptoms flare up with poor diet and most binge eaters don't eat very well and consume lots of carbs and sugar which can mess with insulin.
One last thing . . . don't get discouraged! My healing has been a long hard road with many setbacks, but the love I have for myself and my body was hard won and something I treasure! It has been so worth it!
PCOS is also associated with a high incidence of eating disorders including binge eating and fasting. Eighty percent of people with PCOS practice binge eating. The first step in weight loss treatment is to learn to be mindful. Katrin Kratina, MA, RD, LD developed a food journal to help identify hunger and satiety cues. The food journal also teaches about your nutrition needs and your eating habits. Brenda Bryan RD, LD/N a nutritionist for PCOS women at the Center for Applied Reproductive Sciences, uses the Food Pyramid and American Diabetes Guidelines of reducing calories by 250-300 per day from saturated fat and carbohydrates to counsel women with PCOS.

could those of you that have had/have binge eating disorder tell me what you have done or what you did to recover? I dont really know where to begin
I went onto Overeaters Anonymous and i liked the concept but it was a lot to do with God and I'm not a religious person.......
Does anyone have ANY suggestions....at all?

Maybe insulin has a part in it, because i know craving carbs is a symptom of that, have they tested your insulin? Maybe metformin would help?
I suffered with Anorexia as a teen.
Personally i think that EDs are just so common among WOMEN it may just be coincidence that its common among cysters.
I also dont think that EDs ever fully go away, but you learn your warning signs and how to deal with them.
I hope you get the help you need

anyway, I have struggled with eating disorders too and it is not fun. I am into the binge (not purging) part of my eating disorder because I can't purge due to a rip in my esphagus. I think there is a link between the two and I am struggling as well.

I think it is worse for us because where other women struggle with their weight to look good we struggle with our weight for our very wellbeing. I think it is almost impossible to be tackling PCOS without having an obsessive interest in food. We have terrible guilt factors,if we don't stick to our eating programmes we may not be able to have children; that kind of thing really mangles your brain.
I am very interested in this topic as I have anorexic behaviors that are encouraged by medical professionals because I am 5 stone overweight.
For me my eating disorder ended when I managed to lose weight and get down to a normal body size. However when my weight returned so did my eating disorder. I know I am not a girl with an eating disorder but that for me controlling my PCOS leads to being eating disordered.
Madeline I found looking up exactly what my body needed in terms of foods and nutrients and excercise helped me a lot. Now although I have a real messed up relationship with food I am sure my body gets what it needs to fight PCOS and minimise my weight gain. I use all my mesed up thinking to work for me not against me. All my crazy eating disordered expert knowledge is now chanelled into giving me what I need not denying it. Most importantly I recognised that a lot of what I was doing couldbe symptomatic of PCOS. As someone else says your binging could be down to unstable blood sugars. Work at getting your blood sugars as stable as possible before you label and pick on yourself as being eating disordered. Good luck in all this, don't hate yourself for it. xxx

What exactly do you mean?
thanks for your help

I used all of the messed up food obsessions and turned them on their head so that they worked for me. I found being eating disordered I had way more patience than other people when it came to reading about food and I decided to use it to my advantage. I read this board thoroughly and looked into what kinds of eating plans would stabalise my blood sugars and what suppliments I could take.
I made crazy charts and tables about my food intake, excersise, vitamins, medication and weight loss/gain. This isn't healthy I know, but my goal wasn't weight loss but finding out what I needed to do to stabilise my symptoms.
I worked out what I need to maintain my weight. I then added extra excercise to try and lose weight. I also worked out what was the best food options for me. What was the healthiest most filling food I could eat, without gaining weight. I now eat only low GI whole foods and have large enough portions and drink enough water that I stick to my daily meal plans and couldn't possibly eat more. I don't use suppliments anymore as I take metformin, but I found suppliments such as chromium very useful in the beginning, although you have to look into those things carefully yourself.
I am still obsessed with what I eat and find eating very difficult, but I eat right. My weight no longer fluctuates and I do not starve or binge. It took me a long time and I would love to be able to live without thinking so much about food but I am doing the very best for myself. In fact I am in as much control as it is possible to be with PCOS and that goes a long way to beating eating disorders. Telly yourself you are going to get some control back and then work at it, it gave me peace of mind, I hope you get the same.
xx

Hi Madeleine;
I've struggled with binge eating for many years. I went to OA too but found it a bit too cult-like for my taste and not enough concrete treatment.
I've done talk therapy, but I recently stumbled upon hypnotherapy and I have to say, its been a real eye-opener. It has helped me distinguish among real hunger and feelings of anxiety which feel exactly like hunger. Through hypnotherapy, I learned deep breathing exercises which help me get back under control "in the moment" of bingeing and I've had a much easier time controlling the binges after some treatment. I highly recommend it.
I am a HUGE skeptic, but my results have been subtle but real.
Best of luck!
Sarah

I wanted to echo what Flubby posted about exercise...Its major in controlling symptoms. For me, I have to include a fair amount of weight-lifting because cardio alone doesn't do it.

Eventhough we are all here for you through anything I think telling someone very close to you or a doctor would be more of help. I have never heard of eating disorders being with PCOS but I haven't done much research on that. I want you to get professional help so that you are healthy and well and can fight this the correct way. Please get help and please talk with someone. We are ALWAYS ALWAYS here for you to talk to or listen but sometimes we can't be much of help on serious situations. Good luck dear feel better and PM me anytime if you want!! Have a good day.
