Default Eczema

Is there anyone out there that suffers from eczema? I was diagnosed about 2 years ago with a mild case. Usually some lotion does the trick, but lately I've been getting huge reddish-purple (hickey-like) splotches. ICK! What works for you and can stress really do such ugliness to my skin?

Hi jesstx,

I've suffered with eczema since I was 12 and I'm 30 now. Stress is a big cause of exzema outbreaks. Sometimes I get those hickeys but mostly I get dry a scaley rashes. Mainly on my face and around my hairline. I having an outbreak now because I think my hormones are trying to stabalize.

What I use to treat eczema is hydrocortisone. Stay away from soaps that contain perfumes. I can only use dove, ivory, and dial. Out of those 3, I prefer dove because it moisturize the skin. And thats what we need. Also, don't were fabrics that irritates your. Especially things that contains polyester and have a rough textures to it. Trust me you'll be miserable.

The key thing is to make sure that you keep you skin moisturized. Shea butter is very good. I don't know if you get eczema on your scalp but the best shampoo thats works for me is head and shoulders or in shampoos that makes you scalp tingles like the peppermint shampoo. Girl. Its get rid of the dandruff and the itches. Not to mention it leaves you hair with a clean feeling.

I had patches of eczema around my eyes and on my neck last summer. It's gone now. I use Dove fragrance free bath soap, and one of the fragrance free laundry detergents. People tend to forget about how their clothes touch their body, and that they can be allergic to the laundry detergent. I also make sure I use only hypoallergenic cosmetic and cleansing products on my face.

A doctor can give you a stronger hydrocortisone cream than you can buy at the drugstore, but you should not use it for more than a week at a time, then rest for a week or two. If you are still broken out, try it for a second week.

I just went to the dermatologist for the first time in regards to it (i get back of knees, hips) and he also said do not use fabric softner of any kind because it leaves a film on the fabric that can be irritating. That is, of course, if it is in an area that fabric touches I guess...

What we make at work is a White Soft Paraffin (WSP) and Liquid Paraffin (LP) 50:50 mixture.

The recipe for this is v. easy and can be made at home.

Ingredients

50g WSP* (or petroleum jelly aka Vaseline)
50mL LP** (or Mineral Oil... look for this in the laxative section at your local pharmacy/chemist's )

*any amount of WSP will work, as long as you have an equal quantity of LP to mix it with. For this mixture, 1g = 1mL
**Extra Virgin Olive Oil can be substituted for the mineral oil. Mind you, if you intend on leaving the house, you might not want to be smelling of olive oil.

250mL Plastic container with tight fitting lid (those Glad and or Zip Lock containers work well in this situation)

Method

Take the WSP out of the container and place in the plastic container. Mix well for about 30-60 seconds... this step is important or the whole thing will be hard to mix later on.

Slowly add the LP to the mixed WSP, a little at a time.

Mix well in between each addition of the LP.

Once all of the LP has been added to the WSP, mix for about 30-60 seconds more, just to ensure that everything has been thoroughly mixed.

Watch out that you don't slop over the side of the container, as this mixture is on the runny side and is VERY greasy.

Put the lid on the container and label -- you don't want someone eating this stuff... it won't kill you (after all, people do drink mineral oil for constipation), but I don't think that the vaseline would taste very good.

Slather on skin twice daily, as needed to keep skin moisturized (works well after bathing, when skin is still damp)... my dermatologist usually advises a twice daily usage of this product.

This mixture will keep for the shorter of the two expiry dates on the bottle of mineral oil or the pot that the vaseline came in.
