Effects of Chinese green tea on weight, and hormonal and biochemical profiles in obese patients with polycystic ovary syndrome—a randomized placebo-controlled trial
Alternative Medicine Review, March, 2006 by C.C. Chan, M.W. Koo, E.H. Ng
OBJECTIVES: To study the effects of green tea on body weight, and biochemical and hormonal profiles in obese Chinese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
CONCLUSIONS: Green tea supplementation did not significantly reduce body weight in obese women with PCOS, nor did it alter the glucose or lipid metabolism.
METHODS: Thirty-four obese Chinese women with PCOS were randomized into either treatment with green tea capsules or placebo for 3 months. The anthropometric measurements, and biochemical and hormonal profiles before and after treatment in each group were compared. RESULTS: The body weight of the green tea group decreased by a nonsignificant 2.4% after treatment; whereas the body weight, body mass index (BMI), and body fat content of the control group were significantly higher after 3 months. There were no differences in any of the hormone levels measured in either group. The biochemical profiles of the two groups were also similar except that there was a small but significant rise in the triglyceride level in the green tea group. Fewer patients in the green tea group remained amenorrhoeic, but this was not significantly different from the control group.

I'm wondering why they used capsules instead of having the people actually drink green tea... It would seem to me that if you want to test green tea, then use actual tea...

If anyone's interested, there's a Looooong thread in Diet & Exercise on green tea. Awhile back a bunch of us were drinking it regularly. (It's almost as long as the 'vinegar' thread. Anyone remember the vinegals?)

It really doesn't make any difference. Usually when they use capsules, it is the same product in concentrate or extract.
The problem with the study is that it doesn't say exactly how much of the green tea the people were given, like, how much was in each capsule. Chinese herbs are known to work slowly, and often you need to take significant amounts of them to trigger them to work, then you can slow down to a "maintenance" amount over time. So it could be that for those of us with PCOS, we would need to take MORE than the usual amount of green tea for a few months to get significan results, then over time, we could cut back.
The interesting thing about the results is that they seem to be prevented in a rather negative light. The fact that the women taking green tea didn't gain weight while the control did was called "insignificant." That doesn't sound insignificant to me, especially since they did lose weight. I wouldn't be upset if I lost weight, even only a little, if the ONLY change I made was drinking green tea (or taking a capsule). It seems the results were a little bias.

Hey, even if it just prevents you from gaining (experimental compared to the control group) that's a good enough reason to take/drink it!
EXACTLY!!! Another thing to keep in mind - herbs work slower than drugs. So, maybe it took 2 1/2 months for the green tea to really show that it was working in some of these women, and if they kept using it for a year, they would have a lot more good results. A three month study is no where near long enough.
And, they didn't make any other changes, and they LOST WEIGHT! Doesn't that say SOMETHING good???
