Default Effexor Qs

I finally went and spoke with my doctor about how I've been feeling. I guess I have depression and generalized anxiety disorder. She prescribed me Effexor but I forgot to ask a few questions...

1) Did you lose weight on it? I read that a side effect is weight loss and I also read that loss of appetite is common. Is one the cause of the other or are they independant of each other?

2) How much are you taking? She told me that she's starting me out small and going up to 75 mgs a day after a week but that we'll see if I need to go higher from there. How high do most people go?

3) How long will I have to be on this for?

4) Did you notice a decrease in your sex drive?

5) How long did it take for you to notice results? I'm told that it can take up to 8 weeks. True?

TIA to anyone who is kind enough to take the time to respond!

1) I have lost nothing on this medication.

2) I am taking 75mg and it's the time release one.

3) I have been on Effexor Xr for 2 years now. I really like how I feel on it.

4) I have had a huge decrease in my sex drive, but not sure if it's from the Effexor or the Metformin I was on.

5) I was told it takes atleast 30 days to fully get into your system.

Hope this helps!

Amanda, thanks for replying. I'm taking the XR also. Have you had any negative side effects from it? My sex drive is already nonexistent due to the depression. I was hoping that it would come back but it seems like while the Effexor may work to help the depression, thus helping the sex drive, it will also take away from it before I even notice it back! I guess only time will tell if that will be an issue or not.

Default Effexor

My experience with Effexor has been good. I previously tried Lexapro and it was not working.

I take a time release pill of Effexor XL - 150 mg I believe - per day. I've been using it for almost a year.

I have lost weight but I believe it's because of the change in my diet and exercise habits, not because of medication.

I lost my sex drive with Lexapro but I have it back in full force with Effexor.

It does help curb the feelings of anxiety and mild depression I was experiencing.

3) How long will I have to be on this for?I will probably be on it it my whole life. My mom sometimes takes it during the winters. Everyone is different. My doc asked me how many re-occurances I've had and I told her "many: so I probably won't be getting off anytime soon.

4) Did you notice a decrease in your sex drive?
NO
5) How long did it take for you to notice results? I'm told that it can take up to 8 weeks. True? AT LEAST two weeks.

TIA to anyone who is kind enough to take the time to respond!

Thanks for posting this Connors mom. I am supposed to start this med in the next few days. I was on wellbutrin for my anxiety and depression. I started seeing a counselor and she was surprised that my doctor put me on the wellbutrin. I guess it is a stimulant and it tends to make people more anxious.

I am feeling really down today. I am so sick of this rain!!! I just want to crawl into bed and cry... Things are going to get better!

I took this medicine for a bit. I just wanted to stress to you....DO NOT miss a pill. I got sick once and threw my pill up...the next day I was dizzy, had a headache...it was awful. I felt the same when I was comming off of it.
So take your medicine young lady.
Good luck!!

Default Antidepressants

Keep in mind that each antidepressant is going to be different - not all affect the same parts of the brain. When I was on Lexapro, I was able to go off of it immediately. However, now that I am taking Effexor, my doctor said going off of it is going to be a little harder. You have to slowly lower the dose to get off of Effexor or else there will be unpleasant withdrawal effects. So it's important to remember that with Effexor, you want to make sure you take it regularly and not miss a dose for any length of time. It could cause some discomfort.

Connors Mom,
I am wondering how taking the meds is going. I took my first one today... I am feeling anxious, but I think its me, not the meds.

every woman is different. I initially like effexor xr, but then gained weight and felt like it was doing nothing for me. I do want to mention that I have adult ADD and was later put on Strattera which was actually much better for me. What I've learned is that when adults have attention defecit, it hides itself as depression. I was on several different meds for depression and they didn't work bc what I actually had was attention defecit. Just food for thought. Best wishes to you on Effexor. I was on it for about 8 months.

1) Did you lose weight on it?
when i was on effexor a few years ago, i did not notice a weight change. i think that some people tend to gain while on effexor though, but this can vary from person to person.

2) How much are you taking?
i started on 37.5 mg for a week, went up to 75 mg... then after about 2 months, it stopped working for me so i went up to 150, but i couldn't tolerate the dose- it made me nauseated.

3) How long will I have to be on this for?
it depends on your symptoms. just, as mentioned by others, when you are ready to get off effexor, talk to your doctors about slowly tapering off it b/c it can be a little harsh to stop this medication suddenly.

4) Did you notice a decrease in your sex drive?
no change.

5) How long did it take for you to notice results?
i noticed a change in my level of anxiety within the first couple of weeks, but it took a month for it to really kick in.

hope this helps a bit. and let us know how you're doing on your effexor.

I don't think that this is the med for me! I took it yesterday and I had the worst headache! I also felt very gaggy. I would breath deep and start dry heaving. I am going back to the doctor today. I think I am going to go back on a low dose of zoloft to get me over the hump.

Rosie, how are you doing? Did you go off Effexor?

My dad got sick about a month ago and I had to leave town suddenly. I forgot my pills for a week and I noticed a HUGE difference in how I felt. I started on them again immediately. I've also had my dose upped to 150mg.

Hi, my husband was on Effexor xr and he lost his appetite at first, but after a couple of weeks he was back to normal. Also, he didn't lose his sex drive at all.... but it may have different effects in men than in women. He had to switch to Prozac though, the effexor was just way too expensive. He seems to be doing well on the prozac. Just wanted to tell you what his experience was with it. I really hope it helps you! I have definitely heard good things about it.
