My doctor started me on Effexor today.
Anybody taking this?
Just wondering what to expect...
Hugs

There are many people who take this medication but my experience was awful. As soon as I began taking it, I was shaking, couldn't sit still, my heart was beating rapidly, I was sweating, and couldn't sleep. I talked to the doctor several times and she just kept telling me I'd get used to it. After a week of this suffereing, I stopped anyway. My symptoms cleared up within a day or two. Turns out, Effexor has a compound in it similar to adrenalin, which is why I was feeling so wired all the time.
You'll probably tolerate it just fine since most do. But if you start having crazy symptoms like I did, talk to your doc.

I took it when it first came out, I was about 16. It caused me to have severe nausea and I could not hardly eat anything. Also, when trying to go off it, it was very hard because it made me have these flutterings in my head. I know that sounds odd but I don't know how else to describe it. If you do use it, be prepared for the side effects and if you go off it eventually, don't go cold turkey....ease yourself off.

I loved effexor but there are no studies about it being ok for ttc and pregnancy, so my doc and I decided to go with a drug that has research proving it is safe for ttc and pregnancy....zoloft.
Prozac and paxil are also ok and have lots of research, but my body doesn't like them.
Effexor is great for some but hell for others, take it one day at a time and relaize you must be communicating with doc who gave you the rx so that if need be you can change things around....
oh, btw it causes everyone to have very vivid dreams, they may be nightmares.
Take care and I wish you well!

Below is an abstract from an interesting case study on a depressed woman with PCOS for whom Effexor failed to help, and was only helped by Spiro + Metformin. Depression and PCOS have several features in common, such as increased TNF-alpha, homocysteine, and others, in addition to those listed in the abstract. So, it's not surprising that depression would be common in PCOS. It seems likely, and this study suggests, that agressively treating PCOS should go a long way toward treating the depression.

Common treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome and major depressive disorder: case report and review.
Rasgon NL, Carter MS, Elman S, Bauer M, Love M, Korenman SG. nrasgon@mednet.ucla.edu
We present the case of a young woman with treatment-resistant major depression, who presented to the Mood Disorders Clinic with a Hamilton Psychiatric Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D-21) score of 28, after a year-long treatment with Effexor-XR. The patient also had untreated Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). The resolution of her depressive symptoms resulted from the treatment for PCOS with metformin and spironolactone. The patient remained euthymic 5 months after discontinuation of the antidepressant while continuing therapy for PCOS. We briefly overview of the pertinent literature of the pathophysiology of PCOS and affective disorders, highlighting an overlap in phenotypical presentations between these two disorders. Dysregulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary axis and various end organ systems are implicated in both PCOS and affective disorders. As such, several clinical and biochemical markers are common to both disorders, namely insulin resistance, obesity, and hyperandrogenism. In addition, these metabolic abnormalities are interrelated, causing women with PCOS or affective disorders to get caught in a "vicious cycle" of hormonal dysregulation. The case report presented here illustrates how treatment of symptoms such as insulin resistance and hyperandrogenism can lead to remission of major depressive disorder and PCOS. We suggest that through treatment of underlying metabolic defects, both the mood of the patient and the metabolic condition of PCOS can be assisted.

I'm on day 4 and feeling pretty good. The dose doubles next week, so I guess we'll see how things go then.
Thanks again!!

I was fine while I was on effexor but if I missed a dose I would get extremely bad headaches. One day I decided I didn't want to take it anymore and I went off cold turkey (bad idea) and I ended up going alittle crazy oops I learnt my lesson on that one. Glad to hear it is working well for you.

Hi! I take Effexor XR 150mg and it works great for me. I can see a big difference since switching from celexa. The downside is if I miss a dose I get sort of lightheaded and feel yucky. Hope it works for you!
thank you all so much...
tomorrow I take my first 75mg pill.
Kinda nervous, but so far, no problems.
Thanks again
Hugs

I have taken it for a few years now. I have had no negative effects at all!! It is like a mirical drug for me and my panic attacks!! I love it. I started on the higher dose (70 something), then went down to 30 something a few months (maybe even a year) ago, now I have started only taking it every other day. It has helped me dramatically!! I couldn't even go shopping, to a party, or even drive without having a panic attack!! I haven't had one since I started the meds. Good luck!!

I'm glad to hear you are doing so well on it! I've been on the 75mg for about 2 weeks now and it's done wonders for my moods and energy. But I seem to have lost my appitite...which can't be a bad thing....LOL

While on Effexor 150mg/day, I had several abnormal fasting glucose levels. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I did the diabetic diet, tested at home, the works. It seemed that I could not get my sugar under control. During this time, I decided to go off all of my meds to determine which ones were really necessary. As soon as I got off the Effexor, my sugars returned to normal and have stayed that way. Turns out that if you're not diabetic, eating like one doesn't help. Just something to keep in mind so that you don't get a false diagnosis.

I hadn't thought about that....I haven't been checking my blood sugars. I'll do that.
