Default Effexor = weightgain?

I've been on Effexor for about 5 years now and I really don't have any complaints, other than the nasty withdrawals from forgetting to take it it sometimes. But my mother and hubby have both mentioned that they think I'm gaining weight because of it. I was just curious if any of you who have taken have noticed weight gain.

I have been on several different antidepressants (prozac, lexapro, wellbutrin) and effexor is the only one that seems to work well for me. I don't think my weight gain was related to the effexor. I think it was more with the pcos and insulin resistance- even though my insulin level is on the high side of normal and my glucose levels are okay, but i have all the other symptoms of insulin resistance (skin tags, acne, abdominal obesity)- my RE says it is becuase i'm relatively early in it. Have you tried changing your diet to limit your carbs and are you on metformin-- both metformin and the south beach diet helped me loose 25 lbs in 6 months.

I'm not sure, I've read weight loss is a side effect but I'm on Effexor XR 75mg and I haven't lost any weight. I am actually withdrawing from it because I lost my insurance and can't afford to take it anymore. I have a 3 1/2 month old to care for and the withdrawal side effects are horrendous...but not quite as bad as Paxil. I haven't found as much success with Effexor controlling my anxiety.

Good luck losing some weight!

Mel

I've been on Effexor XR for a little over a year now and I'm pretty sure any weight-gain I've had has had nothing to do with the meds. The only thing I don't like about it are the aweful side effects from forgetting to take it.

I was on effexor XR for a while as a teenager. it made me LOSE so much weight. I dropped from like 130 to 115 in a week, and couldn't gain anything back no matter what i ate (seriously, i ate about 3 cups of ice cream a day...i normally have slow metabolism). it wasn't worth the other side effects though. I wish i could be that thin again!!

I was told by my GP that most antipressants cause weight gain but due to my history with PCOS he decided to put me on Effexor which is not suppose to cause weight gain. I have been on it for 5 years now and at the max dosage. I lost a bit of weight in the beginning of my tx but have gained it back. I haven't gained that much while being on it, up and down 5 lbs which I contribute to having PCOS.

Effexor is my savior by I defintely think it causes weight gain for me. I'm guessing it slows the metabolism.

I was put on effexor after welbutrin made me break out in hives. Effexor did nothing for me except, my doctors suspect, contribute to a suicide attempt. The doctors took me off of it and I did not have any withdrwal symptoms. I feel wonderful since I was diagnosed with PCOS in August and put on Metformin (Upset stomach lasted about a week) Depression and anxiety are all but gone and do not controll my life any more

I took Effexor for amost 5 years so I know what you mean by those nasty 'I forgot a pill!" effects. I took it always with a Wellbutrin. I finally weaned myself off them completely and onto Abilify and Wellbutrin about 3 months ago. Weight gain is a side effect of almost any antidepressant, but Effexor isn't nearly as bad as some other drugs, like Abilify which warns against raising blood sugar (I put on 10 pounds in 2 months with Abilify).

I think it's probably possible that Effexor may have contributed to weight gain, but the weight gain dealing with medicines usually presents itself at the beginning stages of taking the medicine. This is what my doctor informed me when he upped my dosage of Abilify because I was so worried about more weight gain.

My doctor put me on Metformin yesterday and one of the reasons, besides PCOS, was because of depression weight gain. Metfomrin has been proven in studies to help patients on antidepressants lose that weight they've gained. It counteracts the effects of the weight gain and blood sugar spikes associated with antidepressants.

The amin reason I quit Effexor was low libido. It killed my sex drive!

I gained a ton of weight after I went off of effexor. In the begining, it gave me a big energy boost & I lost some weight. I was on it for about 9 months & just couldnt afford it anymore (didnt have prescription coverage) and it wasnt working for me, they kept doubling my dosage to try to keep up but it seemed like I would just adjust to the higher lever. Man, quiting that was a MAJOR feat! The withdrawl symtoms were the worst thing I have ever been through!!
