Anyone tried this? If so was it a success?

Yes, I still have one treatment a month and so far no hair has come back; mind you you have to stay on your meds and keep your hormones in check OR it can come back; the hair can start in new places. . . but you could always check with your doctor first about that / get your doctor to refer you to a trusted electrolyosist.... my endo referred me and I am very happy with my results..... It is expensive; I pay about 135ish for an HOURs worth of treatment; but it makes me feel better about myself and I can afford it for now. That's Canadian money....

So, if you can afford it def. go for it! You will not be disapointed OR try laser; some of the gals who've done that have found that it worked really well for them; I've heard that it isn't perm. though, so even though it's cheaper per session; it will end up costing more; since you will have to keep going back and back again and again for the same hairs. I've had my face done; and now I am on to my stomach and other areas.....

Good luck!

I had electrolysis done in the 80's (I had an extemely horrible case of facial hair) and it lasted basically forever until I had a testosterone surge (was well over 200 for quite some time so new hair growth began) so I'm going back now that my testosterone levels are almost back to normal. But I'd say 25 years without any facial years was pretty good all things considered.

The place I go to charges $15 for 15 minutes, $30 for 30 minutes, $40 for 45 minutes and $50 for 60 minutes, which is generally the same price I was paying back in the 80's.

I go for 30 minutes weekly and then as needed I will start going every other week or once a month until I've reached the end goal.

The thing to remember is that hair grows in different cycles so say you go to the first appt and your face is perfectly smooth and hair free afterwards, but in a week or two you have new growth, don't be alarmed, those are not the same exact hairs you already had zapped, those are hairs that hadn't yet come out so in the first couple of months you will see that happen.

I know some people suggest laser, but for me it's easier to get to the nearest electrolysist and the price is more bearable, although in the end I know I will have spent just as much as laser and spent far more time at the electrolygists office than I would've with laser treatments. So to me rather than wait to have the money for laser I just went with something more feasible for me on a regular basis.

Question trying it now...

I am currently trying electrolysis because laser did not get rid of everything I had hoped. I have my hormones well under control.
I have been for one session and it costs about $60 per hour here in Austin.
So far, the results have been good but I will probably need several more sessions in order to get all the hairs in the right growth stage.
The only bummer of this treatment is that you have to let the hair being treated grow out for several days prior to treatment so the technician can grab it with tweezers. So, I become quite a hermit right before treatment.
The lady treating me obviously does not have hair on her upper lip or chin because she was rather puzzled when when I said " I have to let it grow out for HOW long?" and did not understand my dilemma. Or maybe she just doesn't care. Harumph! Anyway, I will post again after next treatment to let you know how it's going.

I agree that's the most frustrating part of it all. I am quite a hermit for about 3 days prior to my appt as well -- and luckily it's winter so I wear turtlenecks those days b/c my trouble area is right under the chin. If I feel particularly self consious or have to miss an appt (one week it snowed too hard so my appt got canceled) on times like that I will use Jolen face bleach to get me through. I treated myself to a cashmere blend turtleneck as well as some regular turtlenecks from Eddie Bauer. I just keep my eye on the prize...a nice clear face is what's in store for me by putting up with the treatments, right!

I did electrolysis for over a year and it didn't help. (Why did I keep doing it you ask? I haven't a clue). For me laser was much more sucessful, though now a year later, I am having considerable regrowth (though I only finished 3 of 5 sessions).

I found the letting the hair grow part stressful as well- how embarassing!

If your hormones are still out of wack, don't waste your money on either option.

Some of you have mentioned the hourly rates you have been charged for electrolysis. How much area can be covered in an hour? My hormones aren't under control yet, but when they are I am considering having this done. It'll give me time to save up.

It really depends on how dense the hair is in the area. BOth my checks were done in 5 minutes cuz there were only a few hairs.

It is a very slow, labour intensive process. I'd say in the usual 20 minute sessions I had, she would get about 50-75 hairs.

First they have to find a good hair, insert the needle, give ya the juice, pluck the hair, wipe the blood (if needed), and repeat the process.

Also just to say, if you are not finding it effective, imho, stop and save up for laser. I just kept going and ended up with some scarring under my chin from repeating this over and over.

Good luck getting your hormones under control!

If I remember to ask her tonight I will ask how many she thinks she gets per minute, but I can't imagine she gets under 20 hairs per minute and I'm guessing it may be even closer to 60 per minute because they cruise right along and within a second they can zap and pluck at least one or two hairs. This is all relative though, if you have tons of hair laser may be the best option. I'd have liked to go to laser this time just to get it over and done with in a session or two but I couldn't find anyone in the entire state who does it and definitely not in my area (I live in the boonies) so even to go to have electrolysis done is an hour drive each way -- I spend more time driving than I do at the appt.

Quote:

No and yes. It feels like plucking -- so if you find that to be painful then you may find this to be painful. After a few minutes the area gets numbed a bit so you don't notice it so much. The upper lip has a lot of nerve endings in it so that hurts like mad. They have different settings that they use to "zap" the hair so if it hurts too badly they can usually turn down the setting. Right after the session your skin will be red, but they generally put aloe on it to soothe it and usually by the time I get to the store a mile up the road the redness is gone.

The one sure thing about electrolysis is nobody agrees -- some people hate it, some people love it. Since it's cheaper than laser, I say try it one session and if you can't bear it, save up for laser.

RE: Pain

I found pain increased tremendously depending on my hormones. Near AF I found it excrutiating.

As for time- perhaps it is like laser and the length of time they use to zap a hair depends on location, thickness/colour of hair, and what type of system they use. I can't see how they would pluck more than one hair at once as they need to insert the needle in each and every follicle.

Hi, I am also considering on getting electrolysis, but I am a little wary of making sure the equipment is sterile, and the clinician is experienced, could anyone tell me how to go about finding a decent person to go to?? Also, I have some errant, dark, coarse hairs, but lots of peach fuzz, do you all get both removed, or the coarse hair, thanks!!!!
