Default Electrolysis

I have been dealing with being embarassed to show my face and
neck for more than 10 years. I am finally at point where I can afford to have electrolysis done, and am wondering if this is a good route to go. I have been bleaching and tweezing for 10 years and am tired of it! I would love to not have to wear my hair long or down to hide my face. I would love some confidience in my appearance. Is this a good choice?

Hi Ameliabeth,

I had electrolysis many years ago and the hair takes a long time to go. It is well worth it if its just a small patch but if you have a lot or a big patch then I would have light laser. It cost a lot of money but the results are much better adn its just 3 to 6 appointments. Once you get rid of the hair what ever you do you still have to touch it up. I am having light laser and have found it the best form of hair removal. It isn't painful and the hair just drops out.

Try and get some info on it and see how you feel. You can get a free consultation in most places so go and have a chat to a TRAINED therpaist.

If the hairiness is due to hormonal problems, I don't think electrolysis is the answer. I did ten years of electrolysis (no other options over 20 years ago) and it was useless (and hurt like hell on the lip area--I also had chin, sideburns, and chest area done). If the hormones are there, the hair will grow back. I would think the same goes for laser, but some women claim good results.

For me, the only thing that worked was medication that stops your body from producing the male hormone, Testosterone. I've been on Aldactone for over 12 years and would hate to be without it.

NOTE: You must NOT be on Aldactone (or the generic Spironolactone) is trying to conceive as it can cause severe birth defects.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

I had electrolysis alittle over 5 yeras ago. I was very happy with the results. I had to stop treatments b/c I move out of state and money was alittle tight. I have just started back the beginning of July and already I see so much improvement. Search for some info in your area and set up for a consultation to talk to the technician. The office I go to there was a 15 min session free with consultation.

Hope this helps.

My sister did electrolysis. It cost her a lot of money and now she looks worse than before. She gets like 15 giant black hairs all over her neck and lips. It cut the number down, but now she looks weird. I personally, pluck the big black hairs every morning. I found that the hair on my upper lip can be plucked easily if you don't pull. You just get the hair in the tweezers and hold it gently away from the face. It takes a second put eventually it comes out without all the pain. I shave the rest on my lips. I tried bleaching for three years but every year that passes, the hair gets worse and I would have to bleach daily to keep the roots light.

Good Luck to you. Some women spend 15 minutes putting on makeup in the morning, I just spend 15 minutes trying to look like a woman.

Hi, Electoylsis is wonderful if you have an electroylsist that knows what they are doing. If you have thick course hair make sure
they are using the blend method. My electoylsist tells me that
thermolysis used on thick course hair does not destroy the root of the hair which will make the hair worse but the blend method
is heat and electric current combined and will destroy the hair
follicle. Electoylsis does take a long time but I think that it is worth the time, money and pain. Also do some research about
electolysis and laser. Laser has only been proven to reduce
hair growth by the FDA. But electroylsis has been proven to
permantley remove unwanted hair by the FDA.

I had about five months of electrolysis treatments and I was, to say the least, thrilled. It really helped a lot.

Looking good girl!!

Electrolysis did not work great for me and was very expensive. Laser worked better for me although I still need to shave, I have less hair and sparser hair.

Well, between electrolysis and laser I can get by with shaving maybe once or twice a week, where before I was needing to do it twice a day -- sometimes more.

So it's really been an incredible improvement for me -- I'm so glad there are some more options becoming available for those of us with this problem.

I'm telling you guys you need to go to an electroylsist that knows what they are doing my electrolysist has people come from as far away as Africa to see her. I used to shave everyday but I haven't shaved one single time in about 4 months and to me that's absolutely wonderful.

Thumbs up

I had electrolysis done for about a period of 6 months a couple of years ago and could see no improvement. Recently I have been going to have laser hair removal done and LOVE it! If you just need to have a few hairs removed then electrolysis is the way to go, but the hair on my chin and lip is pretty thick, so laser is much cheaper than electrolysis would have been. I think that I would have had to do electrolysis for years before getting rid of most of my hair! Now after only 3 laser treatments ($75 each) I am almost hair free. The hair that is left on my face is blonde and lasers do not work on blonde hair, yet. I don't know how anyone can think that electrolysis is cheaper. (it cost me $50/hour) In the long run, I would have spent TONS more on electrolysis! :o

I have since had laser hair removal done on my underarms and bikini line. And my aesthesist gave me a discount for doing all of those areas too! I have had my underarms done only once and now only have to shave them about once per week!

I would reccomend that you check into laser hair removal in your area and see what your prices are and if your skin/hair type is compatible for laser.

i had electrolysis for about a year.....and thought it was wonderfull!......i used to shave and of course the more you shave, the more course the hair grows back!...darker too!, and that was how i was, i resorted to electrolysis coz like you i was embarrassed and used to hide my face, with my hair!
since having electrolysis, the hair that has come back, is very fine, and very light...hardly noticable!

i agree with an above poster if you find the right electrolysis beautician it can work...takes time, money and pain, but its worth it!!

Hello Hampshire Hog,
I totally agree with you that electroylsis is the way to go.
I also had laser it was terrible but, I guess it really depends on what makes you feel better and if laser works for some I'm not knocking it. It's just that electrolysis worked for me. I think that everyone that is getting laser should read all they can about what the FDA has to say about laser and compare that to what the FDA says about electrolysis.
Good Luck to every cyster out there with this problem I know
how terrible it can make us all feel and how desperate we all
are to get rid of this excess hair.

Hi, I am new to the forum and went straight to here because I just started electrolysis this week. I had laser done in france, but it did not work well....I spent about 100 euros a session 8 times! I am now in the US.....it costs 45 dollars a session for electrolysis here in Maryland where I am, but she did a really good job this week, she also applied a numbing cream so that helped a lot. The areas were chin and neck. Next week , we'll do upper lip ! :-( ahhhhhhhh :-( I hop ethe numbing cream will work a miracle cause I don't know if I will be able to take the pain. Do you guys take like an Ibuprofen or somehting like that before you go?
I am glad I found this site.

i love electrolysis! i don't know if laser is an option for you (it isn't for me), but it's not permanent whereas electrolysis is if you get your hormones under control. the pain sucks, especially on the upper lip area but it's much more bearable if i just think about how good i looked pre-pcos symptoms and how happy i'll be when i get back there. i imagine that's what gets everyone through laser/electrolysis .
