Hi all.......I'm considering getting electrolysis done on the sides of my face and my upper lip, maybe my chin too although I don't get much hair there. I'm so sick of having to wax my lip and sideburns pretty much every week or so and it still showing! Has anyone done this? What was it like? What was the cost? Would you do it again? Thanks for any advice. I've always been really embarrassed about my hair growth, especially on my face and I'm just getting sick and tired of it. Thanks.
it's expensive but much better than laser (in my opinion) I had mine done four years ago and none has come back (just light blonde peach fuzz that everyone has) I get that removed too now; just because it bugs me; but it has been worth it; i pay about 130 dollars (Canadian) per HOUR... i know it's a lot but it's so worth it and i believe it is more perm. than laser .... good luck! suggestion, though, ask your doctor / endocronologist who she would reccomend (you want someone experienced)

I started with one practitioner a few years ago. She charged me $90 for an hour or $50 for half an hour. She used the galvanic system where you can put multiple needles in at once.
In the beginning, I could only handle her using about half the needles she had, but as my tolerance to the pain (it's not discomfort no matter what they tell you) got better, she was able to use more needles and it started going fairly quickly.
She decided to go back to school for a nursing degree, and so for about 3 years now I haven't had anyone working on me. But I just made a consult appointment with someone new. She's charging $100/hour or $60/half hour.
Questions to ask are about their certification and training. How they clean their needles ( I like to hear the word autoclave). Also I prefer to purchase my own needles so she uses them only on me. It's about $25 investment but it takes some of the worry out of it for me. Some people will even let you keep your own needles between visits so you know for sure they're yours when you get there.
One more note on the pain. I found the chin and side of face bearable. She could only do one or two needles at a time on my lip even when my tolerance was up. I found the further in towards the middle she worked, the more likely I was to feel like sneezing. I would consider a topical anesthetic in the future. They're prescription, but I think might be worth it.
Also, remember to get hydrated before your appointment. A dehydrated hair follicle shrivels up and holds onto the hair making it difficult to get a direct path down to the bottom of he root. Plus I think water helps conduct the electricity properly. Moisturise and use vitamin E afterwards. I'm prone to a little scabbing, but it goes away in a day or two and there are no scars.
I had electrology done for about a year and a half (going every week faithfully) and was getting nowhere. Six weeks ago I had lazer done on a small section of my face to see if it would work on me. And to this day I have not one hair in the area that was treated. As a matter of fact I am going tomorrow to have the rest of my face done. Yes it is expensive but I am so tired of being embarrased and having to shave every day sometimes twice a day and still being able to tell because there is still an after 5 shadow. On the small area treated 6 weeks ago (like i said earlier) there is not one single hair there and there is almost no shadow. To do the sideburn area down to the chin (under the jaw a bit) and the upper lip, is considered a full face treatment and costs about $250.00. I recommend lazer over electrology (but that is my opinion). Good luck to you.
(just light blonde peach fuzz that everyone has) I get that removed too now; just because it bugs me;
hey there, i'm in the same boat as you... the peach fuzz bugs me now that i'm done removing most of the thicker hairs with electrolysis. now i am having the peach fuzz removed, but since all people have so much peach fuzz, it's hard to see much progress. have you seen a lot of progress with removing peach fuzz? where on your face are you removing peach fuzz? for me i'm removing it on my chin, neck, jaw, and sides of face.

hey, i've been having electrolysis done for nearly a year on my chin area. also a little on my neck, and peach fuzz on the sides of my face. it has been absolutely permanent, and i've gone for nearly a month with NO coarse hairs on my chin. that used to be unheard of for me.
i pay $39 for 20 minutes. my electrolygist uses the blend method. the pain has never been too bad for me. it's been a lifesaver... it's so nice to not have to pluck anymore.
just make sure your hormones are under control before you embark on a permanent hair removal process. if your testosterone is still high, the hair will grow back.
I recommend lazer over electrology (but that is my opinion).
really different hair removal methods are better for different people... laser works for people who have large areas of excess hair that is darker than their skin. people with light hair, or fine hair benefit more from electrolysis. people with only sparse hair may benefit more from electrolysis.
i'm so glad you're getting good results with laser! good for you to invest in a permanent hair removal method. it's the best thing i've done for my self-image
Hey I just posted in another post about making sure your electrolysist does not use hydrocortisone on your face after the treatment. My situation is now worse than when I begin, so all that money was for nothing because I didn't realize until it was too late what that woman was putting on my face!!!

What is hydrocortisone? Does it cause more hair to grow, or something?

What is hydrocortisone? Does it cause more hair to grow, or something?
Hyrdocortisone is a is corticosteroid, which is similar to cortisone which is a natural hormone produced by your adrenal glands, and since it is has both cortisone and steroid components, in excess this can lead to extra hair growth, especially in people who have sensitive hair follicles that react to hormones and androgens like cortisone and steroids.
Hydrocortisone is used to help soothe skin conditions, like eczema, or in the case of my electrolysis, help bring down the level of redness from the treatment, but it made my situation worse. I mean it's not horrible, but now I have some more hair to deal with than before, and the few months that I went resulted in no difference because of what she was putting on my skin.
My electrologist used to use neosporin on the face afterwards immediately to make sure that in it's inflamed state, I didn't get some sort of infection. I found it sticky and that dust would just get attracted to me on my way home.
I have always tried to use natural solutions and have used homeopathic medicine since I was a baby, so I thought I'd turn to that. I use calendula. It comes in a gel form from a company called Boeric and Taffel (my spelling may be off, but it'll come up on google). The name of it is califlora.
Basically a thin layer helps heal the area and it dries pretty quickly so it's not sticky or slimy feeling. It may feel a bit tight though, kind of like a face mask a little. I'd put that stuff on right after and then whenever I'm home...and right before bed. My skin would be red the day of treatment but by 2 days later, it would be completely healed.
thanks TNT, that was a good tip about alternatives for the skin. I am stil left scratching my head as to why my former electrologist would use a cream that was a steroid on people with extra hair that they are getting treated for? I hope it wasn't done on purpose, but in this day and age, people can be so unethical you know!
Thanks for all the advice! I have very light skin and very dark hair.....not a good combo for excess hair growth! I think I'm going to look into both laser and electrolysis and see which one is a better option. I have a lot of self esteem issues regarding the hair on my face and I just want it GONE. If I could afford to do my whole body I would! Thanks girls....
