Electrolytes are things like potassium, sodium, calcium, etc. Your cells use them for electrical conduction and having them at the right levels keeps all your cells happy - including your heart and kidneys.
Electrolytes can be measured with a regular blood test. Spironolactone (aka Aldactone) is a potassium sparing diruretic, so what that means it causes you to pee off extra fluid, while not making you lose the potassium you normally would in your urine. Potassium works in a fairly tight normal range as measured in your blood, so it's important it doesn't creep up too high (which sometimes happens with spiro). Since potassium is essential for keeping your heart happy and beating regularily, it's a good idea to check it now and again while you're on a potassium sparing diruretic.
Whew - make sense? It's all physiology and chemistry, but spiro has the added benefit for some women of decreasing androgens.
Hope that helps!
