The other day I went to be evaluated for IR. Well all of that was normal but my liver enzymes were a little high. Is that normal with PCOS??? He said it was not high enough to worry about but he is going to check it and my IR again in 3 months.
Don't know for sure. A few years ago (before I ever heard of PCOS) I had a full blood panel done because I was just so cold all the time. My liver enzymes were high but he said not to worry about it. As soon as I get to the store though, I'm going to get some dandelion to help cleanse my liver. My acne is getting better with the other herbs I'm taking but the stuff on my chin is still holding on so I think if I do the liver cleansing it will help.

I had routine bloodwork done a good 6 months ago (before I was diagnosed with pcos) b/c I was having mild night sweats. All the blood came back normal except for my prolactin which was a little up. Doc said to get another prolactin test done in 6 weeks by the surgery nurse.
So, when I go to the nurse for a repeat test, she looks up my last blood tests and explains about the raised prolactin - then she also mentions that my liver enzymes were also slightly raised. Now obviously, my doc didn't think it was anything to be bothered about b/c she did not mention this to me when I saw her so I asked the nurse what it meant and she said it was nothing to be concerned about at all, really insignificant.
Anyway, my second prolactin test came back within the normal range but I still remain curious about what these raised liver enzymes mean.
Like you ashlee, mine were obviously not high enough to be worried about or even have a repeat test. But does anyone know what does it mean if it's high? Considering I've not had another test I wouldn't no if they've highered, lowered, or stayed the same.
Btw, I'm currently taking Dianette (Diane-35) to control acne and induce regualr periods
I have to get my Liver Enzymes tested again in 3 months. So I guess when I go back in June, I can ask some more questions. I am currently taking Yasmin BCP.
This one can definitely be chalked up to PCOS. The doc who diagnosed me and the RE I saw later both said that fatty liver is common with PCOS. That could cause an enzyme increase. For instance, my ALT is always a little high, even when I'm not on Met. I periodically do a detox, too, especially since the Met has an effect on the liver.

ashlee, do you take a lot of Tylenol-based stuff? I wonder, too, if PCOS causes elevated liver enzymes. I never had elevated liver enzymes until early this year, which kind of scared me, but I think it is due to medication I take (a lot of Tylenol-based analgesics), which I'm weaning off of currently. Before I got my last laparoscopy, my obgyn did a Hep panel, because the liver enzymes were still elevated. In Dec 2004, my SGOT was 35 and my SGPT was 33-normal. In April of 2004, my SGOT was 23, my SGPT 20, so they are increasing somewhat fast within time. I don't have the paperwork in front of me for the most recent levels, but they're still high. In Mar 2004, I was chalked up as having a fatty liver via CT scan. So what does all this mean? Maybe it is the PCOS or the Tylenol? I don't like it, especially since I'm starting the Fortamet w/ "possible" (whatever that "lactosidosis" thing is with affecting our livers) There are those "liver detox" packages we can buy at the health food stores, thought I may try that. Elevated liver enzymes are new to me as of early this year and hope they go down!
Mazzy24, the only thing my obgyn told me about why they could be high, is either from alcohol or too much Tylenol-based products. I'm sure there's MANY more possibiities though.
ashlee, sounds like you're in good hands *thumbs up*

I have always hated to take medicine but if I did take some kind of pain med it was ibuprofen. I know that tylenol will hurt your liver so I have always stayed away from it. I dont drink any kind of alcohol. Sooo I am not sure why mine are elevated.
I may go back to him next week though. He was testing me for IR which was fine. So I was telling the lady over our department and she said that I may have hyperinsulinimeia(sp) So I want to go talk to him about possibly getting on glucophage. I have never had trouble with my sugar except felling like it "bottoms" out. I get jittery, and start sweating, and get sick to my stomach. So glucophage would help level off my insulin levels and help me lose weight!
I love both of my Dr's! They are both really kind and realize that this is a real problem and not me just being overweight. They both suggest weight loss to help, but they are really kind about it!
Thanks for all the info! This site has really helped me cope with having this!
Yep, I always would take Advil only, until that stopped helping any kind of pain. I don't drink alcohol either, I feel the same way you do--why are they elevated...you get the same things I do.. the sugar "bottoms" out. I get jittery, and start sweating, and get sick to my stomach as well. So the Fortamet (in my case) would help level off my insulin levels and help me lose weight!
**Best of luck to you and let us know how it goes. We're so lucky to have docs who are kind about "telling us" we need to lose weight. It is a battle, but we can do it, and when we accept that only WE can lose the weight, it makes things a lot easier, I think.
Keep smiling
I may go to the gyn tomorrow because I am having some problems after taking Provera, but that is a different post. So I may ask him what he thinks it might be with the liver stuff. If my liver enzymes are high will that make me bleed heavier??? I need to go check that out!
My provera problem is post in "Other Medications" if any of you have any input. My thread is "Provera side effects"
"If my liver enzymes are high will that make me bleed heavier???"
Totally clueless on that question. Will go check out the Provera thread. I thought I was going to bed lol it's after 1am here and beat, had to ask Kat about a med in her story. Anyhoo, hope you get some answers from your obgyn tomorrow. Proactive is the way to go-emotionally draining, but has to be worth it in the end
CysysBgone - Yes, I'm sure there are many more causes than what your obgyn suggested. I don't drink either although I did read that tetracyline antibiotics can cause an elevation and I took those for several months to control acne. I also wonder if Dianette is responsible to some extent as I've read that usage can sometimes affect the liver in some people.
Anyway, my doc and nurse thought nothing of it (just hope they didn't assume it was b/c I drank a lot, lol) and funny how we all have ELE *and* pcos.
Mazzy - I thought the same thing LOL, my docs must think Im an alcoholic, but they know Im not, it's just that feeling. I also took several tetracycline antibiotics ie: Minocin as well when I was younger, though. Who knows. Never been on Dianette, is that the Diane birth control pill I see ladies here post about? I'm assuming so. I've been on a lot of meds over the last 5 years, I think they have to have some effect on our liver enzymes. I agree.
These common ELE in a lot of us is odd. I checked out my recent paperwork before the laparoscopy I just had, and my liver enzymes on Mar 2nd 2005, were ALT (SGPT) 73, the range said 13 - 50. On Mar 8th 2005, (which all could have just been from the lap), Glucose was 122. In Jan 2005, my insulin was 12.1 - but I think it changes a lot for some reason. Not sure what a "sed rate' is, but mine was high at 29 norm said 0 - 20 couldn't find the recent SGOT though I have so many papers in my "medical" files, it's surreal lol and it's hard to make out all these levels and what they mean, then ask the docs all my questions.
ashlee, hope you got some rest, and af is heading out!
hi, i had the same problem. My endo said that it can be from being overweight that the liver sometimes excretes fat. I dont know what that means but i have to get my liver retested in 3 months.
