Default Elevated Liver Panel = Frustration

Ok so I finally found a specialist in March. Wonderful doc, specializes in PCOS. Is working in research for a major local university etc. First thing she did was tell me I was on too low a dose of met.

I'm on 500 mg twice a day. She wanted me on 2000 mg - gave me a prescription for fortamet. I decided to hold off until I got back from a 3 week vacation in case I had side effects or other things that were wrong.

I had a follow up appointment with her a month later to take care of some lingering questions I had. In the mean time, I scheduled a regular appointment with my primary care physician. She ran my usual panel. Cholesterol etc and I asked her to run the thyroid panel since my PCOS doc (an endocrinologist) thought I might be subclinically hypothyroid. PCOS doc dx'd me with hypothyroid and prescribed levothyroxine in addition this time.

So we get the numbers back and my PCP tells me that my liver numbers were elevated. She asked me to come back and get more blood drawn for a full liver panel. PCOS doc wasn't too concerned, said it's probably fatty liver and that was that.

Being a science oriented person I like to change one variable at a time so I can track if I'm having a problem with something what the reason is. I was about to start on the 2000 mg fortamet this week. I start a new prescription tomorrow. And my PCP calls back to tell me that my panel number are concerning her and she doesn't want me to increase the met until we get all these questions answered because it may do damage to my liver.

So tomorrow I start levothyroxine instead but that means I have to wait 2 months to start the 2000 mg of met. I'm so frustrated I could scream. I finally have a doctor who knows more about this disease than I do. She wants to treat it and my body has decided to throw another roadblock up.

I just don't know what I'll do if I'm told I have to get off met because of my liver. I'll start by screaming, but I don't know what's next.

I go in today to get another hole in my arm to find out if I have hepatitis today. I'm not sure what I'm hoping for here. I'm just really frustrated. Oh yeah and my cholesterol etc is down so I thought I was doing so well!

My DH has elevated liver enzymes and the doc chalked it up to his diet. They said he should avoid Tylonol and fatty foods. Maybe if you can get your enzymes down your doc won't be as worried. I'm hearing more and more about people with fatty liver. There are different tests they can do to see if there is permanent damage or if it's temporary. DH had a scan done and they said no scaring, so he could recover (IF he stops eating like he does).

Does met cause increased liver enzymes?
Best to you starting the Levothyroxine, just try to remember, baby steps, one thing at a time. The positive in all this is that your cholesterol went down yay! Keep us posted will you?
That is concerning. (to me)
JFYI, I have a fatty liver and elevated enzymes, it worries me, but I'm doing all I can on my end thus far. Going to the endo Friday.

Default thanks for letting me vent

The docs concern is that since my weight isn't up, my cholesterol is down, triglycerides are down etc that she can't explain the sudden jump it went from like 38 to 98 in less than a year.

Anyway, I started the levo this a.m. and a bunch of supplements that the endo recommended. B12, calcium + D, my multi vit. (which I'm horrible about taking) and omega-3. I need to get a lower dose of alpha lipoic acid, but I'll do that tomorrow.

I"m a little calmer, because I did some extensive reading yesterday (instead of the quick look I took before I went off the deep end). And the tests she's running are what she need to do to eliminate all the other possibilities so all we're left with is fatty liver.

Well anyway, I'm also giving this IR diet another shake. I don't think I can do it all at once, but I'm going to try to make it to dinner time tonight. Then I'll see about working dinner in slowly over the next week or so.

I had the same problem with my liver enzymes when I started met. My gyn had me come in every month to test them because met can cause them to go up if you're body isn't adjusting well to the met. That's what she told me anyways. Anyways, my last appt she was considering changing the Rx to something else and take me off the met but she consulted another dr. who is an internal specialist. He said that it's a common thing when starting met that liver enzymes rise, but they will begin to normalize. My last test they actually started to go down. So, after a long story, I would talk to your specialist. You have 2 drs. and are getting conflicting info.
