I've been going to my hairdresser ever since I was a toddler but now that I am losing hair and have a bald spot I'm embarrassed to get my hair cut. I need to get my hair cut, but I know that the hairdressers like to gossip. Are there hair dressers that specialize in cutting hair for women with hair loss?

I am sure there are hairdressers that are used to dealing with thinning hair, but I don't know that they would advertise it. After all, no one wants to admit that their hair is thinning. Are you afraid that your hairdresser is going to tell other people your hair is thinning? Or are you afraid that your hairdresser doesn't know how to cut your hair to make it look thicker?
As far as I can tell, the best way to find a new hairdresser is to ask people who cuts their hair. Whenever I see someone with a really good cut, I just tell them how cute their hair is, and ask who does it. I have never had someone refuse to tell me. In your case, you might look for someone whose hair appears fine and/or thin, and ask them.

I was wondering the same thing, Taylor. I've been putting off getting my hair cut because I don't want the hairdresser to notice my thinning hair. It's got to be done, though. I think tommorrow I'm going to call around and just ask the salons if they have anyone there who has experience or specializes in cutting thinning hair. I'm just so afraid getting it cut will make it more obvious.
If the same hairdresser has been cutting your hair since you were little she probably knows quite a bit about your hair and might be able to give you a cut best suited for your hair type to help cover the bald spot. (I hope that make sense.) Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

I have used the same hairdresser for years and when my hair started thinning I was embarrassed but I decided to just be blatent and say. She was actually very hepful and went through it all for me saying what ways I could have it done the best. Luckily I have to have a laugh about it or else I would cry so I found the 'straight out with it' way the best to deal with it personally. Good luck. x

I put off getting my hair cut for over 2yr due to it thinning...I had moved to another area aswell, so the thought of having to find a hairdresser was very stressful. In the end I knew I had to have it cut, so I rung a place that was not in the centre of town with alot of people walking by etc and when booking the appt, explained to them about my hair thinning and how very apprehensive I was in getting it cut. They were great when I arrived and made me feel very comfortable and we spoke about how to cut it to make it look thicker etc...she also said that thinning hair in woman happens alot more that we truly know, so they deal with it all the time...
Its difficult, but once you make that first move and get your hair cut and it looks and feels great, you'll have wished you did it sooner..I know I did!!
Good luck!!

Ladies, I know the temptation not to go in for a haircut.....
But really, don't feel that way, because a good hair stylist has definitely "seen it all".
And this is something I have noticed, EVERY SINGLE DAY because these days I pay a lot of attention to hair and especially to women with thinning hair. If a woman has a cute hair style, freshly groomed, with great color, even if she has SIGNIFICANT and highly visible thinning, she still looks way way better than some one who isn't keeping up a well-groomed appearance.
When I see women who clearly are dealing with thinning hair issues, and it looks like they aren't getting a regular cut or style, so they have shapeless, lank, droopy, unkempt hair, well then, they just look depressed, and UNHEALTHY. You may think you are hiding the thinning or loss problems by growing the hair longer, and you may be loathe to go get a nice cut/style. But that doesn't hide anything.
Way better to have pretty, healthy looking well cut and styled thinning hair, than unkempt uncared for out of date thinning hair.

I think you should speak with a few hairdressers about your concern over privacy and proper styling. A decent hairdresser should NOT make fun of you under any circumstances. If anyone does, go immediately to their manager.

I know what you mean. I wa\s soooooooooo nerveous to get my hair cut. But I just came out with it - and told her about my bald/ cysts. She said that she'd seen it all before, and was really helpful.
Thanks ladies for the replies. It helps to know that I'm not the only one who feels embarrassed. I'm not worried my hairdresser will make fun of me, but she loves to gossip. When I get my hair cut she tells me things about other clients so I figure she would probably talk about me too. I'm probably just being paranoid! So far I have been wearing my hair certain ways to cover up the majorly thinning parts. I'm not ready to tell people my hair is thinning.

If you have a Vidal Sassoon in your area, I'd suggest you try them. They have a 2 year training process where they have to learn all sorts of techniques for all sorts of kinds of hair, so they all come out with standardized experience in what to do for specific problems. While I was in there last (getting a free haircut from a trainee), the experienced hairdresser kitty-corner transformed two middle-aged/older ladies with thinning hair into two older ladies with short lush haircuts. It was absolutely amazing.
I understand this problem all to well. I have had the same hairdresser for many years, and she has watched as my scalp became more noticeable than my hair. I am blessed to have such a loyal hairdresser and friend. My advice is to trust who you know. If you have had the same hairdresser for many years, then she or he probably knows you best and would not do or say anything to hurt you. Just don't do what I did, and risk punk hair over being embarrassed to visit your usual hairdresser. I would rather her see my bald spot, than walk out with a horrible cut, or hot pink hair ever again.
do a search for hair loss places ... I go to a a lady in my birth town thank god I found her she sees all types of hair loss adn she has been a godsend ... when I first started "receeding" I was in a Toni and Guy in London and the hair dresser grabbed the short bits of hair and said "what is this" ... at the time I didnt know .. I mean how insensitive ... she actuallyasked if I cut the haiur myself .. I said no !!!!!!
you would think a hair dresser should be aware of all tyupes of hair and hair loss
