Well, I am pretty sure that my clit is larger than most.. I base my opinion on the mags and pornos I've looked at. Also, I have worked as a dancer(stripper), and have had the chance to make a live comparison. However, I have not measured mine or anyone else's.

I do know however that I am Multi-Orgasmic because of my clit, and I feel it is one of the very few blessings to arise out of PCOS!
Also, in my vast experience, it seems that most men love large clitoris'. ( plus they can find it easier!!! LOL)

This is one symptom that need not be "corrected."
The clitoris has only one purpose-pleasure.

MORE CLITORIS=MORE PLEASURE

So, ENJOY!!!

Ok I just had to respond to this. I too noticed my clitoris was larger at a young age. It seems to have changed as I got older (it is smaller now). Anyway, at my yearly appt. my obgyn and I were discussing PCOS and the male factor. Know mind you I was in the stirrups and he was doing his thing. The next thing I know he spreads my lips apart and gets a good look at my clitoris and said "No you aren't manly, I have had women whose clitoris is the size of my thumb" and he actually gave me the thumbs up sign. I could have died. Now looking back it is funny. Anyway, it could be a good part of the whole PCOS thing. I always looked at it as a plus. LOL. Bamaca

suddenly i remember wanting to ask my dr if it was a symptom when she spoke outloud the day i was diagnosed 5 years ago..."yes ,your clitoris is rather large"

i think i just took a gulp and let her finish...i hadnt any idea what the heck was going on with my body.

now fully aware of my symptoms i can agree with the thoughts of this being one of them...geesh! what else?

Wow this thread is a roller coaster, I was intrigued, enlightened and humoured to say the least.

I think mine is of average size, will check with dh on that later *wink wink* he he.

However, one thing that no one else has addresesd here is this. The first post on this topic mentioned that the doctor remarked it was rather large, called the nurse in and got out a tape measure??? WHAT THE HECK?

There must clearly be some official measurement out there somewhere lest why else would this doctor be measuring her clitoris? It ain't for furniture that's for sure.

I have to have an exam next week myself. I am hoping against hope that the doc doesn't want to measure it, give me a thumbs up or call in a train of medical students. If any of the above happened I am not sure what I would do.

I am still perplexed though as to why this guy measured this ladies clitoris, and for that matter HOW??? Anyone else with me here?

Tangie, I think the Dr. measured it because of their obsession with measuring their penises. I've never heard of a there being an "average' sized clitoris. Although we know that most penises average 5-7 inches. Why is that do you think? Because men are obsessed with penis size and measuring. LOL. Maybe he was measuring to compare it with his. Who knows, but you ask men and all of them seem to know the exact measurements of their penis. This thread is making me laugh my butt off though. Bamaca

Tangie, you are hilarious!! I am ROTFLMAO! And yes, I am with you!

I quite agree, there is no need for measurement. Imagine if someone needed to read your medical records (for whatever reason). Try and explain that one!

See I'd kick the doctor in the face if any of the above three things happened. There will be no measurement, no up close and personal examination resulting in a thumbs up and heck no there will not be a group of snot nosed trainees looking at my parts!

Also Bamaca, I think you may be right. Men made medical standards for the longest time and I'm sure since they feel the need to know the measurements of their penis' that they had to come up with some way to measure femail genitalia. After all, I'm sure they think we don't measure up in alot of other areas, why not genitalia too? Although I'd never believe a man's measurement of his penis since they tend to "overinflate" those numbers!

I actually knew about the correlation with bigger clit and more testosterone, so I'd always be checking down there to see if I got better...Its weird, but I feel like since I got bigger, sometimes, I don't get the same sensation like I used to , or I have to try harder to feel down there. It looks swollen all of the time, when before I got sick, it was usually shriveled up looking unless I was excited. Oh well, I'm hoping it goes down a bit in size b/c it is a little annoying to always be plump and swollen.

that image of a line of med students cracks me up. sometimes you'd wish they'd be more sensitive to you! like you want to whole world seeing you down there.geesh. oh well. such is life

Ohh-one question while one this topic! Does anyone have a "hole" between hood of clitoris and clitoris (like right above the clit??). I can't see the closure of skin there and whenever I pull up on the hood, I just feel a breeze, almost like there is a hole leading to my internal organs or something! lol.I know, kinda weird. I've seen little coarse, straight hairs growing out of this area (please don't laugh!), and I don't think thats normal..I asked a doc about this, and he chuckled, but didn't really know what to make of it when he saw..does anyone out there by chance have this problem. Maybe its a pcos thang..or maybe I just got a weird abnormality

Smokes: Ok - it's been a while since I looked at an anatomy chart.. but could this possibly be the opening to your urinary tract? (urethra?) Its usually between your clitoris and your vaginal opening though.

The fact that your doctor had the audacity to laugh at your question and STILL not answer it really p's me off though. Dammit it's hard enough to work up the courage to ask questions like that - and then they LAUGH? talk about totally unprofessional and definitely insensitive. @#$$%. With doctors like that no wonder we women feel such shame when it comes to our female parts!!!

If this is bothering you smokes I'd find another doctor and ask them. Or nail your current doc to the wall and MAKE him/her answer your question. Chin up - be PROUD!

Though it's not an official symptom, an abnormally oversized clitoris could certainly result from PCOS.

It's important to remember what PCOS is. Basically, PCOS is a syndrome (collection of related symptoms) women are diagnosed with when androgenization (masculinizing) is observed in absence of any obvious or known cause (for example: steroid abuse in body builders, pituitary tumor or other endocrinological disease, etc). Most cases of PCOS are caused by IRS (insulin resistance syndrome), because IRS is so common today due to our poor diets. The high refined sugar content of our diets is the main reason so many syndromes which were unheard of in the past are common today: IRS (everything from moderate hypoglycemia, to impaired glucose tolerance (pre-diabetes), to the very advanced manifestation of diabetes type 2 is a direct manifestation of IRS). There are also syndromes which are actually symptoms of IRS themselves, such as heart disease, obesity, and yes - most types of PCOS.
However, it's important to remember that not all women who will be diagnosed with PCOS actually have IRS (which is strong evidence showing that not all instances of female androgenziation are caused by IRS necessarily). I fully believe in the future that once we learn more about syndromes and diseases which affect female fertility, the label of PCOS will be done away with (or at least there will be different "types" of PCOS identified and labeled, much like doctors soon discovered there were different types of diabetes, similar ONLY in symptoms but totally unrelated in pathology).

Anyway. There are certain criteria which are to be met before a doctor would agree a woman exhibits symptoms of androgenization. Usually these are hirutism (excess hair growth), hair loss in a male-pattern fashion (androgen-related hair loss), anovulation (absence of ovulation) and other fertility abnormalities. However, these are just main symptoms. The common link all PCOS symptoms have in common is that they are caused by elevated/abnormal sex hormone levels - too much androgens. The clitoris is very receptive to testosterone and yes, it will enlarge should a severe enough hormonal disorder be present.

The kinds of androgenization symptoms you develop depends entirely on how bad off your disease is. Someone with moderate PCOS (most cases) will show maybe some hair above the lip, a tendency towards moodiness, and menstrual irregularities. Someone with more severe PCOS might experience more severe body hair growth, slight acne, poorly balanced moods with a marked tendency towards anger & depression, severe acne all over face chest & back, severe menstrual abnormalities, and noticeable head hair loss... and yes, clitoral enlargement might also be a symptom.
Another factor is age. If you developed your PCOS early in life (during puberty), effects of androgenization will be more than superficial and less reversible. Craniofacial boney structures, particularly jaw, cheekbones, brow bones are highly sensitive to testosterone levels. During puberty hormonal imbalances are more devastating than they otherwise would have been later in life, due to the sexual maturation & general growth processes your body is designed to induce and be receptive to. In other words, high testosterone at 16 is more likely to cause observable, irreversible symptoms of androgenization than it otherwise would have, had the same exact hormonal imbalance occurred at 30.

SO basically, yes, an enlarged clitoris can be symptomatic of PCOS, however whether or not you have this symptom depends entirely on your unique case.

Jael,
Thanks for your support! Needless to say I didn't go back to that doc. No, it's not my urethra, b/c its above my clitoris, not below, if you know what I mean. That doc just said, "oh, it will close up" like it was a little cut in my skin or something, which it is not. I figured, if the guy doesn't know, he doesn't know. But I agree with you, he's very unprofessional. He should have at least said that he didn't know, and he'll look it up, or something. docs aren't the brightest people out there when it comes to common sense.

Aisha-I've never really looked, but I'd imagine mine does

prosc-If I understand you correctly, i'd say that i'm kinda flat, it doesn't really stick out, but I'd say we are all created different sizes and shapes and it's all very normal.

hope that helps

Hey ladies,

I just learned that there are 2 possible causes of PCOS type symptoms. Insulin resistance and adrena hyperplasia. I read that an enlarged clitoris is a more common symptom of adrenal hyperplasia. Ask your doctors about this issue because if it isn't PCOS and is in fact CAH (Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia) you could be on the wrong medications as it is a totally different set of problems even though the symptoms it causes are incredibly close to those of PCOS.

I don't claim to know any of this for certain, but I've done a little reading on it so if may be something you want to look into.
