Default Endo up'd my dosage to 2000

I was on 1000 mg/day since 09/24/03. I just saw my endo.

I told him I am doing fine and he noticed the slight weightloss...labs look good.

He said "You are on a baby dosage of both drugs (met & spiro)". He upped my dosage to 2000 mg a day of met and to 100 mg a day of spiro. I asked him why and he said 'to give you the optimal effect". I said "Well, I am losing weight and everything is fine...is the higher dosage to just make sure everything runs most effectively?" and he answered "yes".

I know I should be thrilled however my stomach is not thrilled. I am going through a slight adjustment (started higher dosage on the 27th, the day before yesterday). I am wondering why such high a dosage ... is this just insurance?

By the way, my endo told me "since you are 5'7", a tall one, if you get down to 160, or even 170 lbs., we can take you off of all this crap".

I asked him if my risk of diabetecs would go down if I got to that weight (170) and he said "it would go down considerabley".

I am wondering how I can TOTALLY prevent diabetecs or am I doomed to get it?

Thank the Lord, praise God for the weightloss that just started up every week.

Honey, take my word for it...dose up s-l-o-w-l-y! If you were at 1000, start at 1250 and then go up every week until you hit your Dr's goal dose. That way you don't lose the whole dose due to side effects.

You CAN prevent Diabetes, but it depends on how long your pancreas has been over-producing insulin and how insulin sensitive you are. They say that losing even 5% of your body weight lowers the risk of diabetes by 52%...that's huge!! But every body is different, so every situation is unique. I am down 52 pounds from 186 to 134. And although my risks are greatly reduced, I still have insulin resistance which can lead to my pancreas shutting down later on in life and causing diabetes, if I don't keep things under control. Every bit you do can help to stack the odds against you, as long as your pancreas hasn't been damanged by over-production of insulin for so long that it's too far gone. The sooner the pre-diabetes signs are caught and life changes are made, the better your chances are of kicking it's butt. That's why the sooner we make positive life changes, the better our odds are.

Hope it helps...Good luck with the new dose.
