The effect of clomiphene citrate on the endometrium during different phases of the menstrual cycle is assessed.
The effect of clomiphene citrate (CC) on the endometrium is dependent on menstrual phase, study findings indicate.
"It is reported that midcycle endometrial thickness is thinner in women taking CC than in women with a natural cycle, and this may affect implantation," say Dr. S. Dehbashi (Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Iran) and colleagues.
To investigate further, they studied 31 patients with unexplained infertility, who received 50 mg/day of CC for 5 days from the fifth day of their menstrual cycle, for at least one cycle. A group of 31 healthy women served as a control group. Thickness and echo patterns of the endometrium were measured during the later proliferative and midsecretory phases of the menstrual cycle.
The results showed that, compared with the controls, the endometria of the patients receiving CC were significantly thinner during the late proliferative phase, while there was no difference between the two groups in the midsecretory phase. CC did not appear to affect the echogenic pattern of the endometrium.
"In this study, owing to a lack of change in midsecretory or preimplantation endometrium, it seems that the dosage and timing of CC administration were suitable for the patients," the researchers conclude.
