I had break through bleeding and spotting on yasmin and am now having breakthrough bleeding and/or funky discharge (sorry for TMI) days 8-18 on Necon 1/35. After doing some searching I learned that the main cause of break through bleeding is low estrogen. Is low estrogen level typical for someone wiht PCOS? I'm wondering if I need to change BCP's yet again, and have a call into my doctor. Anybody have a clue what I should do.

Break through bleeding can occur with low estrogen but also by an imbalance in the ratio of prog. to estrogen in birth control pills. Funky discharge or an increase of discharge is usually assoc. with High estrogen pills.
Necon is high in estrogen compared to progestin. If it continues I would look for a pill more balanced such as ortho cyclen, desogen, or anything that isn't an extreme of estrogen or prog.
By the way generic pills have a tendency to cause break through bleeding in some people so be aware when they fill your script! Hope this helps. Look at the sticky at the top of this forum about bc pill selection. It breaks them out by strength. Good Luck!

Thank you so much for the info Chrissy. Sounds like you really know your bcp "stuff." I'm just so tired of waking up in the morning not knowing what's gonna happen with my body that day or from moment to moment for that matter. Thanks again.

I just spoke with my gyn's nurse and told her my whole problem. she sounded like she was at a loss for words at first then said that she wanted me to try either nordet or lovral. I can't find info on either one of them. Do you know anything about either one of them. She said "they're both great for break through bleeding." I guess we shall see.

nordette and lo ovral are very similar pills in that they have a fairly low progestin content, moderate estrogen and a fairly high androgenic progestin. If you don't have skin or excess hair issues it may work great. I took the lo ovral and did fine with it way back when. It would probably help the bleeding since the estrogen and progestin are more in balance than with the necon and yasmin. If androgens are an issue for you I'd try ortho cyclen, demulen or desogen, I don't think break through bleeding is a particular problem with these pills generally. They all take a few months to adjust to especially when pill hopping like I've done in the past.
I am getting some of my information on the family practice notebook.com web site under the gynec. section in the contraception information. I'll try to post a better explanation of where it is all located soon.

Shellfish here is the site I use quite a bit to help me sort the hormone issues with bc pills. I wish the nurses at my Dr.'s office would check this out-it would make things alot easier!
Use the contents on the left to check out the Contraception side effect management page. Scroll down to the assorted pages and look up each bc pill by name of check out the sections of progestin activity, estrogenic activity, and progestin androgenic activity and it will help you understand how the pills are formulated.
Good luck! Probably more information than you wanted but a useful site!
Hope this helps!
Chris
