Default Everyone thinks I am crazy

I am so glad that I found this website. I have not been officially diagnosed with PCOS (yet) but I am convinced that I must have it. My general doctor was no help when I told her my symptoms and what I thought was wrong. She sent me for a blood test but didn't actually test me for the things needed to indentify PCOS. She simply tested my cholesterol, blood count/chemistry, thyroid, etc. When the results came back that I was healthy her only suggestion was that I increase aerobic exercise. So I truly thought I was fine even though I only get my periods once every three or four months. Five months later I went back to her and firmly asked for a referral to some sort of specialist. I have my first appointment this Wednesday. It is just to an OB/GYN though but I am so excited to finally start the steps to actually figure out what is going on with me. Like most of you I have the typcial symptoms- missing periods, infertility (we've been trying for over a year before I realized that I might not be ovulating during my long cycles), acne, weight gain, facial hair.. My DH thinks I am crazy. He thinks that I must be a hypochondriac for thinking I have PCOS. My family thinks I am crazy. My co-workers think I am crazy. The only person who doesn't think I am crazy is my friend who has PCOS. Now I can't wait to prove them wrong. Then again, what if I am just crazy and I don't have PCOS? Any suggestions as to what else it could be? Anyone else have similar stories? I would love to hear them. Thanks for reading this long message.

Well i don't think your crazy, i went back and for the doctors for years before i finally had a referal for a gyno who on only one examination with out any blood test could see that i have a serious case of PCOS.
Hope you finaly get the answers you are looking for, get believed by your family and also welcome to the board.

Hi I'm new here two. It's a great site. my daughter has pcos. It took me two years to finally get a doctor to listen to me . They keep telling me there was nothing wrong with her. No gyn. would see her because she was only 12 and not sexually active. but I new there was some thing wrong .you just don't start your period and then have nothing for 2 years. she was getting with drawn, gained alot of weight, facial hair. ect. so i keep searching. until i finally found a doctor to diagnosis her. she started her on met. worked GREAT for awhile she lost weight just very different. now we are back to missed periods again. but we are seeing a new doctor in pittsburgh next month. we had a great doc in philly . but her insurance will not cover her. so we are going to magee hospital. which is only 1 hr away instead of 5 hrs. but i will drive her where ever she will get the best care. Good luck to you! I Hope to make some new freinds on here two . it will be nice to have some one to talk to that knows what your talking about. sorry for the long message. Sharli

I hope you have good luck with your ob/gyn appointment - that is where I finally got started on the right path to a diagnosis. She said it was probably pcos at my first appointment, did some tests and then referred me to an endo, who did some more tests but they are finally figuring it out and getting started on treatment. Hopefully you'll get some answers soon.

I can also say it is also nice to have an explanation for the way you are feeling - I was starting to wonder if I was crazy too since an earlier visit with my pcp turned up nothing abnormal.

Thanks for sharing everyone. I had a scare today when I came home- a message on my answering machine saying there was a problem with my insurance and that I needed to call the doctor's office back so they could figure it out. I quickly called and spoke to a nice lady who assured me that all was good with my insurance and that I could still come in for my gyno appointment tomorrow. She had no idea why her coworker would have called me and left that message. Strange. I don't think I have ever been so excited to go to the doctors as I am right now. I will finally get some answers.

sag184 - I know what its like to be your daughter. Your a good mom working so hard to find answers. When I was 12 I had my first ovarian cysts doctor told my mom at first that it might be appendicitis or something like that. She did not believe them, so she took me to the emergency room, it turns out it was a cysts the size of a golf ball. 24 hours later I was under going major surgery to remove it.

After that all the other PCOS systems came on slowly. I was final diagnosed at 28 with PCOS.

So keep up with all the good work.

So I went to the my doctor appointment today and he believes that I do indeed have PCOS. Since we are TTC he prescribed provera to induce my period and then clomid. When I asked him about metformin he basically said that is not something he would prescribe now. I don't think he really believes in it. Now I am confused. I don't know what to do. I thought I would get metformin, take it for a couple of months, lose weight, and then conceive. Now that doesn't seem like an option. He ordered a blood test for me to take 7 DPO. Is that a normal time to take a blood test to see if I am insulin resistant? I feel more confused now than I did before I went.

well I agree that your doctor should do a blood test to see if you are insulin resistant BEFORE he starts you on Met because that is what Met is for. That may be why he didn't start you on it already. Also, if you want a second opinion about anything, just see another doctor. Sometimes it take going to see several before you find one who is willing to treat you the way you want to be treated.

The blood test 7 DPO is to test your progesterone levels. It should give you a pretty good indication of whether or not you actually ovulated and if your progesterone levels are high enough to sustain a pregnancy. This is a problem that many PCOS women have. Do you chart your basal temps or use OKPs to determine when your O day probably is? Or are you a lucky one who has fairly regular cycles. Anyway, just schedule your bloodwork for 7 days after that and they should send the results to your dr.
