Excerpt: NOT EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN TOLD SHE HAS PCOS REALLY HAS IT
NOT EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN TOLD SHE HAS PCOS REALLY HAS IT
While I see many women with PCOS who were never told what their problem was, I also see some who have been told that they have PCOS but do not. The skin and hair changes in particular can occur without any of the other features. If you have increased facial or body hair (hirsutism), or loss of hair from the scalp (alopecia) but no other symptoms of PCOS, you may find the articles on acne, increased hair and alopecia helpful to you.
Labels are stereotypes and stereotyping tends to hide individual differences. With PCOS the differences between women with the condition are as important as the similarities.

Kat, along these same lines.. do you know anything about docs testing for cushings vs. PCOS ? I've heard about this also recently.
Symptoms for Cushings are very similar to PCOS. Cushings (and a few other things) should always be ruled out before a doctor settles on a diagnosis of PCOS.

I assume they do this by checking cortisol levels..

My mother was told she has PCOS just because she's overweight and has thinning hair. NO testing was done, the doc just looked at her and blurted it out.

I was diagnosed with blood tests, my endo explained to me my results were consistant with PCOS.

I read an article about PCOS and figured for sure I had it.
My family physician agreed and said he wanted me to see a gyn. for diagnosis.
The gyn. said that PCOS was a made up disorder that doctors tell patients with lack of menses they have to make them feel better.
It's a good thing that I didn't believe her nor have the numerous other doctors that have tested and diagnosed me with me PCOS since.
I do think too many doctors are freely using PCOS as a way to dx patients without having to do the work of testing for other disorders.
I was diagnosed w/ PCOS in 2000 after serious mood swings, excess hair, amenses, weight gain, etc.....my doc did blood tests and confirmed PCOS (due to LH.FH levels) she prescribed bc and I also droped from 187 to around 160..(which was good I guess but I was an athelete in HS (swimmer) who was recruited to swim in college...so I am still pretty overweight according to my ht and body build....) and became regular..and man wasn't that nice!!
Unfortunately...I recently ran out of my Rx for a while (and didn't have time to drive to see my old dr who wouldn't grant my any additional refills before I came in for my annual..because I had already asked for an additional months worth)...so I switched doctors due to time constraints of school and so.....
My new doc did a whole new set of tests..more extentive than the tests my 1st doc did...including insulin levels at fasting, cortisol levles, thyroid, etc....they only show high levels of cholseterol (which runs in my family) but no FH/LH or testosterone issues..but I still am not regular w/o meds...she has swithced my bc and we are waiting to see how things go but I am REALLY confused now...
Any ideas on why did my 1st round of tests in 2000 show elevated ..and I mean WAY elevated LH/FH hormone levels..and now nothing?
Oh, as a side note...=0)
Because of my diaginses in 2000 my sister asked to be checked and she has elevated testosterone levels...(even though she is regular)...and apparently many of the ladies in my family have irregularities and female repro. problems. Who knew?
I personally think it depends on a lot of things.. i was diagnosed through a scan blood test being asked about symptons and a few other things also doing my own research helped. Pcos is more common then i thought it was at first..jus because u have done your research and know some one with pcos does not mean u have it, i know that some people think they hav it because of one minor sympton so it all depends on ur own opinins

Great link Kat, thanks. A side comment for a few of the previous posters, For what it's worth, I too have been told that my hormone levels were elevated and the retested some years later only to find them "normal". This lead my very uninformed MD to tell me that he doesn't think that I have PCOS afterall. I think test results can point you in a direction but, (as is all too common in modern day medicine) we cannot forget to listen to our patient!

I happen to be one of those women. I was told pcos for years and when I discovered years down the road I had celiac disease and it straightened everything out for me. I am no longer considered to have pcos, I have no symptoms and do not have to take glucophage.
With my original diagnosis I never had hair problems or acne. Just obese, fsh to lh ratio (which is now normal by itself) and infertility with miscarriages. It all straightened itself out once I found out I just needed to change with not eating gluten.
Great article, to me pcos is becoming ibs in alot of ways. Which to me means sometimes "we dont know whats wrong with you but here's a diagnosis". It took years for me to figure it out and without help from my dr till I forced him to run the tests on me since to him "its too rare of a disorder". Even though my uncle, who died at 2 from it, and my grandpa had it. It was also was because I was obese, even though half the people with it are
