I'm doing really well for just starting Met. I've had a couple of "D" episodes, but I'm pretty much OK. Just wondering, yesterday and today I really have a lot of GAS! Could this be a side effect of the Met? I haven't changed my diet largely either, so I don't think that's it...

Ooooooooooooh Yes....definetly a met s/e. I drink lots of water and increase my fibre intake when I get that way, because it almost always happens when I'm constipated. Exercise helps this for me, because it tends to get things moving. 'Clearing the pipes' so to speak relieves this problem for me.
I also notice this happens to me most often when I eat certain foods...besides the obvious like beans, certain carbs make this problem reappear, so it's good incentive to stay on the wagon diet-wise.
Hppe it helps.

Thanks for your reply! I really haven't changed my eating habits much, and gas has always been a problem for me anyway, so I was just guessing that it was the Met. Yes after I "clear the pipes" it seems to help in the gas dept, however not so today. Still have the gas after the pipes were cleared. I like to drink lots of water anyway so I'm sure that will help.
By the way, why does Met create GI problems?

I'm surprised you have to ask. LOL Your Dr or pharmacist should have warned you about the side effects of Met which are primarily GI related. They do get better for most of us in time, but it's a bit of an adjustment at first. Do some research online on metformin and you'll see that GI issues are incredibly common. What you are going through is very much par for the course on the drug.

I did know that it was going to cause GI problems, but what I want to know is WHY does it do this? Does anyone know the mechanics of it?

Aaaaaah...i thought you meant no one had told you! I was about to wallop your Dr with a wet noodle!
My Dr didn't know the answer to this, but my theory (for what it's worth), is that since Met regulates insulin and insulin effects metabolism, your new speedier metabolism wreaks havoc on your intestines. Plus your body is used to processing more sugars, so it's all a little foreign to your system. That would explain why the side effects tend to improve for most people after a period of time on the drug and why gradual dosage helps with GI issues.
